- Oops I forgot my skis! Take me back

The Cog Railway on Mount Washington

For the arm chair adventurer...

Reward: french fries at the summit.

In operation since 1869, the cog ascents the west side of Mount Washington, reaching a maximum grade of 37.41 percent at the steepest point on a section called Jacob's Ladder. At this point, the train is suspended 30 feet above ground.

Runs on weekends from Memorial Day through mid October. Operation is of course suspended during snowstorms, gales and other types of extreme weather that often occurs on the mountain.

Powered by coal, the cog unfortunately contributes a considerable amount of pollution on the mountain.

The Mt. Washington Cog Railway provides a promotional page.
