Anybody up for some steeps on mt washington once this new round of snow settles and we get some decent weather?
Saturday or Sunday look like they might be reasonable.
Avi gear is going to be needed.

Not going to be any lines. You're out 'cause you don't own any avi gear. :p
Yup on the Cannon, but waiting for AF to show with my skis today.
Sounds like it would work out about that way, but there is the usual 2-fer at Cannon on SooperBowl Sunday :D
I'm a lazy BoDo and like the shorter drive so I can slide all day and still make it home in time for the Game!
mmmm Tuckerbrook...mmmm Coppermine Trail (gotta have at least a bit of a thrash in the weeds or it won't be a full skiing day :p )

Good point! Might want to hit the cascade from the top this time. PM me if you get psyched. Probably going to be on 183s with no side cut until I get my tree skis sorted out.

Yeah, I know, but your partner might!
Actually, you're probably running more risk than you think on angles below 50º.

Hmm, does sound like a good weekend for tux, though I'm torn between that and taking a shot at some Dacks slides. Hmmmmm.
Do be careful. Hazard looks like it might remain elevated til Saturday. Sunday maybe the best bet.

I'd be up for some action in the Dacks.......if you are seriously considering! Only problem is that my girlfriend surprised me with Metallica tickets for my Birthday(Yeah, it feels as weird as it sounds, but I really do enjoy the Metal Gods but, big concert venues aren't really my style. Besides, I was supposed to be climbing at Smuggs but, now I'll be rocking like I was in middle school. 28 and getting younger everyday...seriously!!!). The tickets were incredibly thoughtful and I am super thankful. Hell, I didn't even know the band was touring.....figured they were half-way to the nursing home. Yes, I did by their latest album. Skipped through it in about five minutes, wasn't impressed! Show is Saturday night in Newark....yup, smack in the middle of the weekend (Be quite Rog....j/k)
So, we are thinking of ice climbing in the Catskills during the day and then heading down to the city that evening. Perhaps we can make a painfully long day trip to Adirondacks on Sunday......
If I don't make it this weekend, I'll hit up the Dacks once I'm back from Switzerland....

OK, enough banter.
Who is in for tux, king ravine, or maybe, GG?
It looks like Sunday and Monday are the best days.
Sunday I'll be at Cannon with my just in case setup (skins, cord, etc)

Hey J.T.~ I am planning to make the trip up to Pinkham tomorrow and would like to join you for a foray into any of the above mentioned areas on Sunday or Monday. I have done Tux several times, but haven't skied King or GG yet. I have the desire and the necessary gear and if you don't go too bloody fast, I believe I can hang with you. As previously mentioned here I travel with my dog Tuckerman, if that's OK with the group. Let me know!

jt, if my beloved Steelers weren't playing in the Big Game on Sunday, I'd a been pointing 'em north, but no can do this time! Plan to hit one resort or another on Saturday, then drink on Sunday! If next Tuesday delivers, good chance I'll be somewhere like Cannon on Wednesday . . .

Saturday I am planning to make a bit of a side trip to fly the iceboat out on Cape Cod. I hope not to have to worry as much about edge sharpness on Sunday! Will crash at the J.D. Lodge tomorrow night and be ready to hit the trail by 7:00 Sunday am. Looking forward to spending the day shredding our own Super Bowl where not a single break will cost more than a handful of M&M Peanuts!

Dude!?! What part of riding the remnants of a very nice storm and some overnight flurries, rocking with fellow T4T, leaving Cannon at 3:15 and being home before 5:30 (all for half the regular price) do you hate?

I'm more or less sitting out this weekend on the grounds of being a good dad and watching football. Superbowl is always a good time, you eat a ton of crap and chill with some friends. I always enjoy it.
That said, I'm def looking to get into tucks in February...

Kind of hard to call the conditions, even now.
The sky has cleared out, so hopefully the sun will be out, contrary to the forecasts.
Wind speed seems to be on the increase, 35-50 is manageable. Higher is not really worth it. Currently, it up in the 80s...
So, the conclusion is get up at 6 and check the conditions. If they are reasonable, I'll drive over to Pinkham for 7:30 and start skinning by 8. I hope to meet up with any takers.
Definitely bring avi gear because the current rating is 3.

Sounds like a plan. Winds forecast to decrease & turn SW which will help the comfort level. I am committed and will be ready to go where ever even if just up to talk with the rangers & have a look around. Mahalo.

For those of us not pretending to live in Europe, the avi danger was (and still is) Considerable.
Jumpturn, I think it's great that you 1) get after it, and 2) do so with avalanche safety in mind. But we're not in Europe, we're in North America. It's not just us egotistical Americans; the Canadians don't use 1-5 to describe the danger either. The scales are similar, but there are differences. There's even differences between european countries in how they interpret and use their 1-5 scale. Why not keep us all speaking the same language? It's no more difficult to type a "C" than a "3", so saving typing time (which would be the only plausible reason I can think of why you often use the 1-5 system) can't be the reason. There's enough people who read this forum who don't have the training, education, and experience enough to know the difference, and they might at times find themselves confused here amidst a vast sea of misinformation, such as:
avy conditions on mount lincoln were high on its west facing aspects. Didnt even have to dig a pit.. hiking in the stuff was enough to tell. 8-10 inches of sugary pow on top of a nice hard layer of depth hoar. this on top of another 6-8 inches of unconsolidated layers. No thanks.
All I'm saying is that there is no need to spread less-than-accurate information. JT, for the sake of all of us, use the north american danger scale.
about the cms829 quote, depth hoar is a term that describes buried faceted snow grains. This is sometimes referred to as "sugar snow." I've never in my life seen a nice hard layer of sugary snow. You can however find faceting near buried crusts, so my guess is what cms was looking at unconsolidated snow atop a crust which may have been atop depth hoar, but the depth hoar itself wouldn't be the hard layer.

lighten up francis!
jt is one of the more colorful characters round these parts and is all fired up about pretty much everything. i would think that most folks no matter what their level of expertise would know where they are at personally with snow safety and knowledge of it and would pay more attention to the snow rangers daily forecast than to be confused by others reports, i could be wrong on this, but just a guess. "considerable" danger is just as confusing or more so than a # anyway. "considerable" should be changed to "serious" to save many peoples confusion as well as lives. call it what you will jt, this is a forum and you're fully entitled to your view of the world and the snow on it.

There seem to be 5 separate levels. Err, maybe 3 means the middle one?
Now for the Euro red herring. Looks like we have an international 5 level standard!
http://www.nwac.us/education_resources/dangerscale.htm
So, the euro and NA ratings are essentially parallel, but it depends on how the forecasters apply the labels. It seems like our Mt Washington guys rarely apply the 5 label, so it would seem 5 is getting conflated with 4. Otherwise the ratings seem parallel, which is the point of international standards.

I not sure that is what Lacman was getting at. Consistent, clear and accurate information help make good decisions. He was nicely pointing out what he felt were variances on this.
You need to stop and think when putting yourself and others are risk. saying "GO, GO, GO" from the forum to the car to the parking lot to the trail... sets up a group dynamic/momentum that could be harder to change.
By the way those of you who stayed home yesterday didn't miss anything. The VIZ was low, the wind was gusty/to strong, the temps were low(ish) and the snow... wind hammered.
