Easter Tux !
I've done it in the past and am about to do it again.
I will be staying in the leanto's
Anyone else headed up there that weekend?
Crowds should be smaller than the usual for a weekend, due to the holiday.

Me and another photographer/reporter gurl will be up at hermit lake, its our first time ever!
any tips would be great!
hopefully we have some of a crowd, as we need that sort of atmosphere for our footage!
we were worried hermit lake would fill up, maybe thats not such a big worry?

Hermit shelters will fill up unless the weather sux. Getting there earlier on friday is the best option.

very interesting comment about the shelters, i was told from the AMC people at the base that those don't fill up too often, unless its a stellar weekend, we are coming saturday, but if you think we need to change that to friday please let us know, as this will require some plan shuffling asap!
was AMC misleading us at the bureau when we called in the other day?
I will be headed up Friday for 2 nights with my 26 year old and 12 year old sons. We got closed out of campsites mid april last year because we got there too late on Fri. We were at the door at 5:45 am on Sat to get one night. We did get to the Summit and it was awesome. The weather doesn't look that great this weekend tho.
Anyone up for a summit sunrise on sunday?
Hi all, didn't find a newbie thread to post to first, so I'll just wade right in to the action over here...
...I've been waiting to get up to Tux again, and am thinking of Saturday. Not too into icy doom, is there any hope of the South aspects of the bowl getting soft at all with the forecast as it stands? Will be hiking up with snowboards.
If it looks too cold, we'll have to, uh, ummm...COLD-check.
between I've been lurking here for like 6 years or so and finally registered, this forum is AWESOME. =)

MAC
I am up for the sunrise at the summit, we will be staying at the lean to's as well, i wonder what is the rules about someone getting tickets for someone else grabbing tickets for people who are coming late, as members of the media we often enjoy freedoms and special access not given to the general public, maybe a call to the AMC center is definitely in order for this trip!
(i think the idea of having someone grab some tix is cool too, not sure the rules on that!)
Will post when we know more,
MAC if you want to do the sunrise thing let me know, im guessing its a boot hike up lol, and that would be a early START!!!!!!!!!

Sunrise Sunday will be about 6:05...Was planning to be there for it myself, starting from GOS. Hope to see you all up there! (as well as the SUN!)

....The general public gets one reservation for one warm body present at the time of issuance. Proxies have been used as stand-ins from time to time, but they must be present and savvy.
Do call the AMC, they may be receptive to the needs of the free-press :D

I'm a definite maybe for Saturday, but will base it on conditions. I get one shot this spring so I want to make it count :)

Color me about 60% for Saturday/Sunday. If the current forecast is dead on accurate (always a big "if" this far out) then Saturday could be a midwinter MODERATE day with not much softening up high, and Sunday with slightly clearer skies but still cold.
But just yesterday, the forecast was saying Saturday would be warm and cloudy and damp, so who knows.

Just put Mt. Washington, NH in the weather search...Can't pick a closer town than that!
kinda looks like the cloud cover will be increasing as the day progresses, which might suggest something like GOS in the morning? Any thoughts?

As far as my thoughts go, I am leaving the Philly area at 3:00 am Friday and planning to head into the GOS area for the weekend. Hope to hit the trail by the crack of noon and be setting up camp/taking an afternoon run by 3:00. Miles to go before I sleep...Miles to go before I sleep!

I'll be heading up the tucks trail hopefully by sundown late friday. Thinking about turning this into a gully climbing weekend instead of bringing the board. Probably solo dodges drop to the summit saturday unless someone wants to join i wanna take a peak at it before droppin in with the board anyway. Mac Im up for a sunday summit sunrise....then i'll shoot back to jersey for easter dinner.
maybe i'll bring the skis and skin up.....which brings me to a quesiton im sure i already know the answer to....is the tuck trails skin-able? im guessing no.

From the Avy report today: http://www.tuckerman.org/avalanche/index.html
As Brian stated yesterday "The Mountain has received quite a bit of rain lately as well as some slushy snow. All of that water has now transformed to the frozen state and it isn't likely to get anywhere near the melting point today. The skiing conditions are terrible and long sliding falls are a real concern. Bring crampons, an ice axe and the ability to use these tools in order to safely travel in steep terrain." Watching the forecasted temperatures and wind speeds will be very important to determine if any softening will occur. The mercury rising to about 15F (-9.5C) today and up towards 20F (-7C) tomorrow won't do much to provide heat to the snow surface.
We'll be in the valley this weekend, with some attempt at skiing but groomers at Wildcat/Sunday River may be in the cards.

My question too.
I'll definitely be up on Saturday. Be there by 9 but need to be back on the road by 3 or 4. Still torn if I should go to Tux or GOS. May depend on which is more skinnable.
Telemark

Actually I assume it would be fine for skinning. It's compacted and holds its snow for a long time. The bottom may be iffy, but once you start up it should be fine.

I'm down to 30%. Just committed to doing a day or two at Rumney. If I get to Tucks all depends on whether I can convince my climbing partner to come along.

awesome....i'll be up there then...either dodges or central in huntington....then maybe up tucks to the summit sun early morning before the sun comes up.

Sounds like the Rumney group is already 5 people not including me, so it should be fine if I go and climb something with some altitude for a day, you are doing Dodges on Saturday? I'd love to climb it although I might get a late start.

We were up in the GOS today and it was pretty tough out there and I don't see it improving before next week. Tucks had to be worse. I was planning on going up tomorrow night and I am bailing. They aren't kidding about the "terrible" part up high.
Sherbie will probably be good and the GOS trail was great around noon. Too much wind today to let it soften up.
TR coming with more info...sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

I feel compelled to do a follow up post since I was the doom and gloom guy yesterday...
The avvy report talks of "some" softening yesterday, but I still think its going to be a tough weekend.
I am going to take a gander at weekend report they are putting out this afternoon and make a final call for my group, but I've already moved my hotel res.
hey, hopefully I am wrong...

The way I read it, snowfall for tonight is looking pretty light:
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/gfs/06/images/gfs_p36_036l.gif
The GFS (link above) has us in the less than .1" zone.
The NAM (link below) tapers the system even more, and might have us on the very northern fringes of the system:
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/nam/12/images/nam_p24_024l.gif
Winds don't really seem to have that happy NW upslope vibe for very long.
Maybe an inch of snow if we're lucky. At least the air should be cold and the ratios favorable.

i'm sure that later in the day, the RIGHT side of the bowl softened up nicely. it just gets sun longer and is more wind protected. i kinda knew this going into yesterday. the problem with only the RIGHT side of the bowl softening is that we'd a been waiting around for it maybe to happen and there would've been quite a few waiting for the same thing. plus, this time of year, the RIGHT side is usually the crappy side from lots of ski traffic and stupidly erratic booters and way too many of em. the tash was/is where the good skiing is. top to bottom cover with nothing bare to walk over or around, ski right to yer car. this weekend? i wouldn't be too confident. one things fer sure, we're certainlynot losing much snow up high. we just gained like a week from no melt. the summit is at 16 degrees right now and the whole thing is fresh white. today could be the day, COULD be the day.
next week? i'm seeing low-mid 50's w/sun for mid week. it'll probably snow 3 feet.
