Going To Tucks... Hopefully

Hi, I am 18 and I have never been to tucks before. I have been aching to get there all year long. I finally have the necessary equipment to make the trip and the only problem now is that I can only find one person who doesn't think i am either crazy or is willing to make the trip and make the investment into winter gear. The person that I plan to have go with me is not a skier and I need to find something for him to do to keep it interesting. He thought of bringing a sled and I said that many people do sled in the ravine but the vast majority get injured. Is it really safe to do this, is there an area where he would be out of people's way and not smash into some boulders? My other question would be if anyone in my vicinity is planning a trip and has room for one more person in case the person I plan to go with backs out on me. So if you can help me with either of these questions, send me an e-mail. Thanx

Im just stating the obvious here.

Its a HUGE bowl, which increases in pitch, a serious pitch at that !

So the higher you go up, the steeper it gets.

So if you bring a sled dont go up super high, take several runs adjusting your height of climb.

If you get going too fast and you arnt near any rocks roll out, and of course watch out for people.

There is an offical Tux channel of 9-14 which you can tune into on your FRS, you will most likely find someone. Also check out the calander off of this site and check when people are headed up.

Everyone here is very nice and would love to show you the ropes.

Remember Tux aint a place for EGO's leave that at home, ski with in your limits, and you should climb up what you plan on skiing, if you can.

I am going to head up on May 6-8th for trip #2 this year, if you want your welcome to join me and a few of my friends.

just go, and yes the bowl is huge, just tube straight down from center ravine and you should be okay, at least for now...

Your sledding pal may get urged to climb higher by the Circus @Lunch Rocks...they should be ignored and your friend can just enjoy the craziness instead. Heads up, At least one of every group should be watching for the various things that can land on you when you are in the ravine:
Falling skiers/boarders
Falling skis/boards
Falling Ice
Falling dogs
Falling waterbottles
Falling cameras (sorry Dan)
and just about anything else, though probably not a South African Swallow

At Tux it's easy to look up, but as RR notes, you have to keep your head up, until the time you leave. So don't get inebriated and space out; you may miss something good, like a skier hucking the Ice Fall, or something really bad, like a chunk of ice the size of a Frostie truck coming right at you at 50 mph.

the last few years it has ALWAYS been difficult to get someone to ski/ride with me at tux.....most of my ski/ride freinds do not have the dedication to tux that i have entrenched within my soul over the past 15 years of going. sooooo i've had to rely on several solo trips. but over the last few years, i've talked a few buddies of mine who love to hike into going along with me....for those who hike it, but do not ski/ride it, there is the spectacle of what is known as lunch rocks.......the most pleseant display of human triumph and carnage can be seen. my buddies have brought sleds, mostly for the slide down sherburne, but have brought them into the bowl. it is only as steep as you climb....

if your bud wants to chill on lunch rocks, just make sure he has some warm gear, as it can get cold just sitting around watching. it is a great people watching atmosphere, i have hiked it a few times just to hang for the day (injuries that enable hiking but no ski or ride)

look at the roll call to see who is going when, you can always hook up with a T4T'r too...

and as it has been said already, check your ego at pinkham and be prepared to turn around, there will always be another day.
nonetheless whenever you DO go, you WILL be back EVERY year. THAT you can count on
