After a long drive got little rest and hiked up in the morning on saturday.
started off around 9:00 got to the lean-tos around 11:15 and dropped off our stuff, Then headed up to whats left of the bowl.
There were about 5 people heading up the center, one in the hourglass chute on the left and looked to be about 15 hiking up in the right chute. which looked like work, as you had to climb above the lunch rocks, then down, then back up again. Im not sure how high you could go from there, but it looked liked you'd have to hike out at the bottom above the lunch rocks.
WE decided to go up the middle, Pretty stiff snow and of course steep, but a great starting run.
We then headed up the right and then up as far as we could go the left, what would be the sluice i guess. It was a little bit of a trick to get past the waterFall, as it had eaten a lot of snow away, and you basically had to clamber across a jumbled of ice forming a bridge. Needless to say the thought of the whole thing breaking apart and hurtling down came to mind. But on the other side we strapped in and it was great. Really nice snow, soft and moveable. and the double fall line, which gets steeper around the corner is a great run.
sat on the rocks for lunch, wathced a woman fall in the middle on the little crevass, loose her skis and roll over the rocks in the middle of the headwall.
She bounced, and rolled to the bottom, but to everyones relief, got up smiling.
about an hour later a guy did the exact same thing, but hit the middle rocks a little harder, and some at the bottom, he got up dazed and it looked like the ski patrol checked him out, he seemed ok.
His skis stayed in the middle of the head wall,. till my friend and i went and got them down. The guy had already left, the ski patrol mentioned something about the skis belonging to the guys wife, and for whatever reason didn't care if she got them back. . .
We then hiked the smalled chute between the hourglass and the head wall.
It was pretty intimidating with the steepness, and the bottom of the run being rocks and debris, no where to bail out if necc.
After that made anothe run up into the sluice, and started down before the rain clouds rolled in.
IT was amazing to see them roll over the top and fill the bowl.
We barely beat the rain to our lean to and set up for the night.
The rain was off and on for a while, and in the middle of it a fox came to visit us at the lean-to, Looked to be a red fox, but was very blonde in color. And of course, he ran away before we could get the cameras out.
IN the morning the rain had stopped , but we were surrounded by a moist dense cloud. couldn't see much more than 20 feet, and being that we were all beat from the day before, and most of us had long drives, we decided not to wait it out. so we headed down. suprisingly only took an hour. after passing what seemed like limitiless number of scout troops.
got to the bottom weighed the packs, and made ready for the long driving journeys.
cant wait till next year!!!!
btw: pictures soon to come.
