Wild show outside tonight... look up north for all the action!

Here is our backyard gate with some of the green glow in the sky...

We're socked-in too, but continuing CME's hold hope for tomorrow and Tuesday nights.

Best viewing is often around local midnight but predicatablity is not good.

At latitudes at the southern edge of visibility, the only sign may be a brightening, usually in a greenish color, of the northern horizon in an area where you know there is no sky glow from a nearby town or shopping mall. Watching the greenish horizon for a while, you may detect an occasional greenish streak going up.

At latitudes around Boston or Albany, detecting that glow is considered seeing the aurorae. Anything more is a special and rare treat.

It's clear and cold here tonight in Ames Iowa. I'm attending a corn de-tassling convention. ;) The lights were visible from my plane, and on the drive from Des Moines on up I35 to Ames. Not super-bright, but mysterious and enchanting; a nice mid-western treat.

If you're breeding hybrids, de-tassling takes away the source of pollen that would otherwise contaminate the ears. The other way to do it is to seal in the silks.
