Gonna pay close attention to the weather and snow conditions this week. If it's right, I mean to aim for Dodge's; if it's not as good, then perhaps GOS or the right side of the ravine. I'm probably only going to pick one day, whichever seems nicer, so I won't decide until Friday... Anyone interested?

I'm planning on going to Tucks either Saturday or Sunday also, depending on which day looks better. I really want to do Dodge's too, since I've never done it and have wanted to the last few years. Get in touch with me and hopefully we can both go ski it, as going with another person is much more safe. Feel free to email me at kiel1020@hotmail.com

I have 4 bunks reserved at Pinkham/Dodge's on Friday night and now can't make it. Let me know if you know anyone who wants that reservation.

I am planning to be at the GOS this Sunday w/ my friend Sally. She'll most likely be skinning (assuming enough snow), I'll be hiking.

I expect to be in GOS both days this weekend... Sat to avoid the worst of the crowds and reduce the intimidation factor for a friend that is coming, and Sun with Ski&Ride.

Given the time of year, but ever changing conditions, should I go ahead and rent an avi beacon/probe for GOS this Sunday? My friend has experience with this, so I don't mind being cautious if there's a chance I might need it.
This will be my first GOS trip, so any advice is appreciated.

Ive been reading, that if you are hiking the GOS trail, stick to the side so as not to ruin it for skiers/riders......makes sense. Have fun regardless!

ski&rideIt could get really soft out there, some snow shoes would help a lot. Not very large, small would be bettter than large, it's a longish trail.

No doubt...
the first time I tried going to GOS we went w/out snowshoes and our legs were bleeding from the postholing..
You can rent shoes at Pinkham Notch

You really shouldn't walk on the GOS trail w/o snowshoes.

10 years ago nobody told us that...
But we learned the lesson 200 feet into the slog... Turned around and got shoes... And then cursed the bootpack while riding back down.. :)

I'd like to hit either oak or great gulf on Sat .. I'd be up for dodges on Sun. Havent been on the board much lately but do we know where they are running the infurno this year? I know last year it was on Hillmans which would make Dodges not very accessable.

I dont own snowshoes though, but do you really need them from now to the end of the season? There's no sign on the GOST about no hiking....so people do, the postholes melt out into huge divots and that melts the snow faster....rent some 'shoes but not real big.
for example, I'm over 185lbs and in powdersnow with a climbing pack on (30lbs - 40lbs) I would be very happy with my 9X30 snowshoes, but in the spring corn, 8x25 would be all I'd need. But if you are skinning in on a split or skis, no need for all that...just boot the mud this w/e and prolly next....after that prolly reduced to carrying the whole kit and wearing the hiking boots and gaiters..... :(
Cold temps and more snow could push that another week or so....if we get so lucky
In the Adirondacks they fine/punish people for booting if there is more than a foot of depth..the guidebook tells the story of climbers who booted into avalanche lake who had to shovel the damage they did to the trail.
Not saying that that should be done here, but given the amount of other restrictions that are there on camping and such (which to be fair, are more of an ecological rather than recreational issue, so in my mind more serious), I'm surprised its not part of the forest law...
Perhaps its a national vs state issue...

Perhaps its a national vs state issue...There's a sliders only policy on the Sherby, but not on the GOST. the WMNF as well as the clientel are pretty fussy about it too. :cooldog:

Who is the "they" that can dole out punishment in the Adirondacks? Its a state park, is it state forest rangers? Who published the guidebook you reference? I'd like to know more about this.

Yeah I'm pretty sure I'm going up on Sunday to ski Dodge's. The Race is over the Lip, so we wouldn't have to worry about it being unaccessable.

Climbing in the Adirondacks : A Guide to Rock and Ice Routes in the Adirondack Park by Don Mellor. The book references the story of two climbers who wanted to do some ice climbing at Avalanche lake but were so discouraged by their shovelling thaat they turned back...

Do you guys have a set agenda for anything in GOS this weekend? Maybe I'll try to find you up there on Sunday. Looks like I'm definitely going Sunday, just not sure if it'll be GOS or something else.

I haven't ruled Dodge's out yet. The temps are forecasted to be upper 50's in Jackson, so I'm gonna guestimate 40's up at skiing elevation.. I just hope Dodge's corns up enough. What I might do is climb up dodge's, and if it doesn't look good, then shoot around into GOS.

My crew will meet skilas at Pinkham in the a.m., but details not worked out yet. I'll let you know. Also, I'll have a radio on 9-14. GOS is the most likely choice, as I'd love to explore other areas (& use snowshoes 1 more time!).

The race is VERY LIKELY over the lip this year. They make the call the morning of the race, no sooner. Spoke with a guy last Sunday who will be up there helping set up the course. He said they expect to set up over the lip, but the final call is never made til the morning of.
That said, get there early for Dodges, both for the sun exposure and IF the race moves to Hillmans you can ski before the race

How long is this race? Is it an all day affair? My only concern with Dodge's too early is it being too firm.

Chauvin Guides say no hiking on the GOST, but I think they post that on their page more out of courtesy... trying to discourage people from hiking on it, prolly to prevent afformentioned unfavorable skiing conditions on the trail.
GOST is a FUN classic NE trail! YeeeeHAW! :skierscared:

There is a post in the neice mtwashington section suggesting dodge or cathedral as a good early morning neve climb. Night temps are way cool until sat night, but sat/sunday/monday nights are warm. I'm thinking of using cathedral or dodge to get into GOS from Hermit Lake and get back via boott-spur on Sunday.
I'm guessing sat morn is the last good ice-climbing morn for a while :-).

That works for me too, possibly leave time for a run elsewhere.
