View Full Version : St. Pat-TUX Day!
My current "agenda" has me tucking the kids in around 7:30 and arriving at Pinkham Notch after 9pm. Hike up (no skins for me yet) and be camping before midnight at HoJo's.
I was discussing with Stoney today about hiking from HoJo to the GoS via Hillman's, but that ends in a "Ski what you didn't hike" option, so I might just be in the ravine all day - perhaps some snowfields.
I've never camped at GOS, so I dunno what it's all about - feel free to enlighting me, as it looks like PWDR8S will be over there, and RR in King Ravine... which I'm not too sure about either.
I'll bring fresh batteries and radio on 9-14, and hopefully will meet DMC at some point and maybe (gasp) slide on snow with him for the first time (of many I can only assume).

Yup.... I'll be doing the goose... er I mean GOS. I'll likely go to set up camp on Thursday up there because I read that Saturday is AMC's ski in GOS day and I want to ski Friday without too many folks if there are freshies to be had (I hope! I hope! I hope! Praise ULLR http://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/774/1659worship.gifhttp://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/774/1659worship.gifhttp://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/774/1659worship.gif May ULLR bless uss with plentiful snows! http://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/774/1659worship.gif The almighty and wonderful ULLR! http://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/774/1659worship.gif ) and on through till Sunday.
That may be shortened by a day pending supplies.

I have st. patty's day off. I work until 10 on Thursday night. Could sleep a couple of hours and drive down. I have to work at 8 on Saturday though so It would have to be a day trip. Put me at 50% pending on Income Tax return and if I can score a passenger.
Affix: any chance you can move your trip up a weekend?

Hmm I want to get up to the rockpile this weekend... if the forecasts play out we'll probably end up with spatially-variable piles of windblow on top of bulletproof refreeze that won't quite thaw out... sounds like classic new england skiing.
I don't get St Pattys off but the weekend is open. Does anybody have a feel for how weather events like what is currently forecast, typically play out in terms of avalanche stability? We're talking about a dusting of new snow on top of what sounds like a very stable base. Seems like spatial variability in the start zones could be the critical consideration. We won't get a couple feet of self-supporting powder, we'll get small isolated touchy slabs. Right?
So what's the strategy?

Looking snowy on top of a freezing rain base:
http://www.erh.noaa.gov/ifps/MapClick.php?site=GYX&llon=-71.537083&rlon=-70.892083&tlat=44.422917&blat=43.780417&smap=1&mp=0&map.x=153&map.y=102
Hopefully that means the upper layers will stick, but keep your eye on the avy report!
Just called Joe Dodge Lodge - it'd be $58 per person. They have some (maybe one) 4 bed rooms available. We could get 2 beds and make the room "private" for an additional $20 or somethign I think.
Just putting the info out there.

....
So what's the strategy?Watch the avi reports and sharpen your edges. http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif At least this current large mass of heavy rain is skirting to the south of the rockpile... less icing potential... we'll have to wait and see on the next round tonight. AND all the reports from various sources are saying it will be snowing after tommorrow! Yippee!
Correction.... Tommorrow afternoon = snow! That'll make it adhere to the wet base all the better thhus less avi prone.
Still a week away, but the forcast just changed dramatically:
Thur->Sun = 35 & Partly Cloudy
Still below freezing most nights, so not the corn-topia I was hoping for.

Speeking of that anyone in the valley this weekend want to stop by for a party we are going to be having a rager! Live band 150 - 200 people. I need to know in advance because it's a private party but I could leave your name at the door. Club will more than likely be full but anyone intrested in an overnight should shot me a PM.

Oh yea .. I'm 100% thinking of heading to Oak VIA Hillmans if weather permits. I'll be up on Friday so I hopefully going to get a chance to scout Monroe brook .. last time I checked it was still running .. so that's why my plan is to currently hit up Hillmans but that might change. All will be dependent on Avy conditions. Probably start skinning at first light shooting to be back to parking lot by 4ish.

I'm heading up Thu night and the Party is on Sat 18 from 9PM to 1AM. If you need a place to crash Thu the club will be empty. Friday and Sat are going to be packed.

I am going to give it a try, if the weather holds. Most likely Ravine, may hit GOS saturday.
Looks like friday would be better day weather wise. Snow showers rest of week...Could be good, could be boilerplate
