Hello to all,
I have spent alot of time on Mt.Washington and finally decided to ski Tucks this year after an awsome winter!!!
I am thinking I am going to invest in, but yet, another pack in order to get my skis to the bowl. I was just wondering how everyone gets there skis to the ravine and any recommendationa for gear.
I invested in some Volant Steel Skis this season. I would recommend them to a seasoned skier any day!! They rock....but, as you may have guessed, slightly heavier than a fiber glass ski. Should be fun!! Come on...every one loves the first part of the Tucks Trail!!
One other thing, If anyone could recommend some Crampons I would appreciate it.
Thanks

The most commonly used method is strapping one ski to each side of pack with tips tied/taped together. Boots in pack or in your ski bindings... however the Tucks crowd can get pretty creative in how they haul up their gear. Check out some of the photos on the site to give you some ideas. Lots of close ups...

There are various types depending on your budget (new $70 and up). EMS in North Conway had some used toe crampons (my wife just bought a pair) but they sold out. You can buy new ones there also or across the street at the Mountain Climbing School shop (forget the name). They also have new and used crampons. I ones I have and recommend are Grivel G-10's (10 points). They can be (partially) seen at

They are about $95 US.

If you have some time before your trip to Tuckermans' check out backpacks on internet sites. A lot of nice packs and good deals. K2, Mountainsmith, Osprey, etc, in various sizes. If you are rushed for time go to EMS or your closest ski shop/mountain.

ski@6288 - don't forget the duct tape! It's a good way to secure the tips together. I've even seen folks duct tape their skis to the pack (not recommended, but if nothing else works...) Remember to keep your ski tails high so they don't hit your calves - you'll be climbing the whole way (and YOUR tail will be hitting your calves 8-).
Crampons, if looking for full - I use Grivel G-10's, my bro uses Kongs, and I've also seen Charlet Moser. All our $80-100. The 10 points are generally easier to walk in than the 12's. Make SURE they fit your boots correctly! I've never used crampons heading up to Tuck's, but may this year (they'll be in the car. BTW - the other shop in No Conway is International Mountain Equipment (IME). You should also check out Ragged Mountain Equipment (stop in next door at the ScareCrow for a Tuckerman's Ale) - SherpaKroto
