ortovox x1 beacon....

thoughts? opinions? this will be my 1st beacon. Looks to me to be a good choice. Need quick opinions before I loose a good deal ;)

I got the F1 and all my friends make fun of me for being in the stone age. In Canada last week though, I had a lengthy discussion with my heli guide as to why they use that primitive unit. Simplicity and time-tested was the answer. He said there are major glitches with a lot of the digital beacons and you're better off with the tried and true analog.

Now, as to the x1 - never used one but have read varying reviews. It is a combination analog - digital beacon. Analog's good because it has greater range (up to 70m). Digital is easier to determine direction and distance when you get close to the victim. By all accounts, x1 is very simple to use, but some complain it's slow when it switches to digital mode - this occurs when you get within 10m of transmitting beacon. Good luck
