Making plans to spend the Inferno weekend in PN: Lodging at Joe Dodge, Saturday at Tux, Sunday somewhere else. Seeker said she'll come too. :) This is the first time my two boys are coming up with me to slide in the Ravine, and the Inferno is going to be great this year! :D Come on up, but make your reservations early!

Sounds like fun - I didn't know it was inferno weekend. I am cod fishing off the coast of Maine out of Green Harbor, MA on 4/20 and have tentative plans to go straight to the rockpile Fri p.m. Prolly be campin somewhere where I'll be happy to host a fresh fish fry for all to enjoy.:D

4/20. Green Day in Green Harbor. Sounds loverly. It would be great to connect at some point.

Sadly, Camping will be out for me with the younguns attending.

Sorry you can't make it, RS.

Funny thing bout green day in green harbor: I go on one annual family cod fishing trip with my cousin and my uncle which by pure coincidence occurs on green day this year. Uncle is a COP. Who retired 1/1/07.:D Who used to own a VW bus  that he drove all over the country following the Dead and Jethro Tull in the 70s. He briefly owned a hydroponic plant store in Colorado ;) in the late 70s / early 80s. When I was in college, Mom once found a certain glass device of mine in her house and freaked out, Unc laughed his ass off, told her she was worrying about nothing and told me he consumed 2 lids a week when he was my age.:D

Decisions . . . decisions . . . decisions . . . :D Detailed TR to follow.

Cool story P.S.

My 2 cents:

1. Come to Tux on saturday for the Inferno. I'll show you the secret beer stash after we descend the headwall. You can take the secret trail to GOS in the afternoon or the morning.

2. If you can stay in PN long enough to visit GOS on sunday, I'm guessing that Seeker may be interesting in joining you.

Sounds like a plan, esp. if I can set up camp Fri, head over to see the inferno madness (which I've never witnessed 1st hand) early sat a.m., then make my escape from the maddening crowds back to the camp in the gulf sat p.m. til sun.

Nooooo.... not the secret beer stash! RS... I'm going to have Seeker spank you. You're divulging too much info already! ;)

Heh heh.... Who knows?.... You might find me lurking about in them thar slides that weekend. I've done the circus thing at SOI and don't think I need any more.... unless I bring a new initiate or two to the party.

All is pending upon my keeping my sanity.:doh::cooldog:

Fun, fun, fun--more spanking!! ;) :p

Not sure what my Sunday plans will be, but if it is a gorgeous day and there is at least some snow left on the GOS trail, I might be interested in hiking up to the slides.

A spanking every now and then is a healthy thing. As for the secret beer stash.....I don't always find it in the Ravine, so I make sure to bring my own. And this time I'll have home-grown sherpas! :)

Not on the cape - on mainland near Marshfield.

It's a very nice area. We fish 35-40 miles offshore, east of the Stellwagen bank. Last year we had cod over 50#s (you could fit a soccer ball in their mouths). Usually catch our limit in about 2 hours.

Once this new snow is settled it's going to be *awesome*.

From today's AVI report:

"Today we're dealing with a mountain that looks VERY different than it did two days ago. It's sort of like going shopping with the family and looking down to see a different child holding your hand than the one you're expecting. Unlike that scenario, today on the mountain we're actually glad to make the trade. The Summit picked up another 7.8"(19.8cm) in the last 24 hours while Hermit Lake picked up 5.5"(14 cm). Recent densities have been just below 10% and it's starting to feel even lighter underfoot. These recent accumulations bring storm totals to 17"(43.2cm) at Hermit Lake and 15.6"(39.6) at the Summit. Winds throughout the first half of the storm had a southerly component and averaged around 40mph(64kph). Yesterday midmorning winds made a fairly abrupt change to the NW & WNW and have decreased slightly. Nonetheless the Summit has reported blowing snow for almost all of the hourly observations since snowfall began more than 48 hours ago. Wind loading will continue today with W winds forecasted to blow up to 45mph(72kph) with higher gusts this morning. Such winds are ideal for transport of snow into the starting zones of many forecast areas."

I'm new to this forum and have only scratched the surface of what is here, so be patient if I'm asking tired questions or asking them in the wrong thread.
I haven’t been to Tucks in many years, and now I'm heading back with two of my sons (ages 12 and 14). I had been targeting a week day (the 20th) to avoid the crowds, but didn't realize until now that I picked the lead up to the Inferno. Is this day typically different from any other Friday, or will the activity on the mountain have already ramped up?
Thanks.

Thanks.Best if you can get into a shelter on Thursday night or very early on Friday. It will be jammin up there after mid-day on Friday. Major avvy concerns, check the board and ask the rangers about the conditions too. There will be plenty of skiing on the Sure-Burn* and the GOST but there is a new storm and conditions in the Ravine and various gullies should be reason for caution.

* Laps on the Sherby, down to the cache and up the TRT are looking good as a backup plan

We're crashing at a friends place Thursday and hitting the trail at first light on Friday (assuming avy conditions improve). If we're looking for a quieter scene, would you recommend GOS? I've never been over that way. What's the access trail like to ski? Thanks for the tips.

I'm racing this year and worst case scenario looks like we have today's storm, another storm Sun/Mon and yet another midweek. We could be using the Sherbie as the actual ski leg during the race if the conditions don't improve!

RR
04-12-2007, 01:56 PM
...If we're looking for a quieter scene, would you recommend GOS? ....Not for camping this w/e. The shelters/tent platforms at Hermit Lake are out of slide paths. Camping in the GOS puts you close to slide paths...

...I've never been over that way. What's the access trail like to ski? ...The trail is very nice, a few decent steeps and often a bit narrower than the Sherby. There are some ups and downs fairly low and again higher up. Skins or snowshoes on the GOST will make more smiles...postholing up, while "legal", is not so nice for descenders and a bunch of hard work too.

There is a slide path crossing the trail about 3/4th of the way up....there's a drop into it and climb out of it...if you must cross it, go one-at-a-time and no one should stop while they are crossing it. Imo, the high point before you drop into it makes a fine place to use for a turn-around.

 This is did not know. Are you talking about that dogleg thing--where you bang a hard left, climb a bit, then drop down (always fun on skins)?

I didn't know it was a slide path. Yikes.

Okay, so who all is taking part in the Inferno. I'm scheduled to do the ski - certainly appears there will be enought snow to come over the Lip, but stability???
Going back before the Inferno was revived, this is beginning to remind me of the April/May of '96 (maybe it was '97, but pretty sure '96). Bailed on the bowl in late April of '96 the same weekend 2 were killed in an avalanche.
Skied that year in mid-May (I think Mother's Day weekend) from the top of Left Gully to the car (and this was before the bridge at the bottom of the Sherbie had been completed!) without even thinking of removing skis.

Last couple of years that part of the race has been done on Left Gully.

Don't know what would happen if the race coincides with an avy cycle...
This could be interesting!

I'm doing the whole Inferno sh-bangabang. I spoke with Al today and they're heading up this weekend to take in the conditions. He says he likes to call the ball a week out, but will keep an eye on it all next week.

Chance for precipitation all next week in Jackson, which makes you think that it would be snow in the bowl the way things are going. Not sure if what the ski leg will look like if the avy danger is too much. I'd be psyched if the ski run was on the Sherbie so the race would finish at Pinkham...that'd be niiiiiiice.

I'll be at my ski club this weekend in Jackson. If anyone need a warm, dry, inexpensive place to sleep this weekend, send me a PM.

Since my head injury prevents me from doing the race this year, I volunteered to help out. Looks like I'll be at the Bike to hike transition point, which is a good spot for me since I won't have to go into the Ravine and be tempted to ski anymore than I will be by having to look at Wildcat the whole day!

Speaking of head injuries, I was watching the marathon today and they mentioned that Robert Cheriuyot lost 2 months of training because of the concussion he suffered when he hit his head after slipping at the finish line of the Chicago marathon last fall. That is similar to the recovery that I'm facing... I'm 4 weeks into 8 weeks of mandatory couch duty. But all this new snow might make it possible for me to ski again in June!

chickwhorips
04-17-2007, 02:18 PM
I think that they will be looking to do it in Left Gully in possible, since that puts the race course away from the bulk of the crowd, and it has worked well in the past couple of years.

But at truepatriot said, I think that the organizers are seeing how things pan out in the next day or two. I think they set the course up first thing on Saturday morning, so I can see them making that decision with the rangers...

It would be a zoo at Hojo's if the race didn't go into the ravine but just went down the Sherby!

truepatriot09
04-17-2007, 09:58 PM
From reading today's Avy bulletin and looking at the forecast I think they're going to be hardpressed to find a traditional Tux run that won't have some sort of Avy danger on Saturday. And I can't imagine they'd take any risk in setting the course if there's any danger at all to volunteers or racers. I spoke to Al the other day and he's thinking we could possibly do the lower half of Hillman's and down Sherbie...but that was last week.

They're predicting more snow up there through Thursday. It's going to be great for the next month...but probably just a wee bit dangerous this weekend...ya know?!

Yup - me too neither. Methinks that thar 3 foot o 20%+ density mushed pertaters, more crap falling from the sky for the next day, freeze and monster thaw cycle will be steerin' me clear of the gulf this weekend. Not the best place to camp when natural activity starts happenin. Plus, me fishin trip got cancelled with the stormy seas, so I won't be in MA on Fri anyhow. And frankly, I could give a rat's arse about SOI (no offense to any supporters / participants :) ).
Think I'm gonna wait for shyte to settle down a lil bit before I hit the gulf.

NWS is saying mostly sunny for the White Mountains on Saturday. The forecast looks good.

Not sure about the avalanche conditions though. I don't think things are going to be settled out by then. Last weekend the rangers had their hands full with 350 people. I can't imagine what they are going to do with 3,500 people.

Given the recent precip mix and coming warmth, I firmly believe the snowpack will not stabilize until early to mid next week. Not a good time to hit TUX.
