3 friends and I are staying the week of April 16-20 and planning to ski as much as possible. Being budjet minded I was wondering were I could camp near the area. I hear there are only three tent platforms at the hermit lake shelters. What are the chances of these being filled up mid-week and if they are what alternatives could there be? I have a 4 person, 4 season tent, we all have -40 degree bags and stoves, filters, food etc. Thanks
I think there are more like 8 lean-to's at hermit lake. Mid week things are almost never full. It fills on sat morning.
I dunno how many "tent-platforms" there are, but the year I stayed in a tent, there were at least 3 other tents, and room for more. There might have been a platform under us, but I couldn't tell becuase we were on snow. I would bet that the time you're planning on going, you're gonna be on snow too.

There are 8 lean-to's with a total capacity of 86 people. There is also limited tenting space. No advanced reservations. Stop in at the Pinkham Notch visitor center when you get there to check availability. Other option is the Joe Dodge Center at Pinkham.

I believe there is a car camping spot about 4-5 miles beyond the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center. It's on the left. Don't recall the name. With the snow we've gotten this year it may be a while before it's open.

This is the Dolly Copp campground - I've been staying there for the last 5 or 6 years in the Spring while doing tucks - $10.00 per car. Always plenty of space, fills up quickly late at night though.
