REI Garage Sale

Going on today. My wife reminded me this a.m., so I hopped in the car and headed up to the REI in Reading. Got at least one real big steal: a Big Agnes Seedhouse SL2 tent for $74. It said there were runs in the mesh... I couldn't find them. In fact, I got home and set it up in the living room and I'm pretty sure the tent was never used. No dirt, grime, mesh runs, nothing... the guy lines weren't even attached. It looks brand new. I'm giddy and my wife just doesn't understand what the big deal is. It's superlight (hence the SL in the name) and packs up really small. It'll fit my wife and I, but will probably be used mostly as a nice big solo tent or a 1 man + dog tent. I compared it to my EMS Tristar that's served me well for many years... it is so much smaller and so much lighter... It weighs in at about 3# compared to 6-7# for my Tristar 2 man. My back will thank me.

Also picked up an REI Geo Mountain 3 man, 4 season former rental ten for $34. It certainly has been used, but other than being a bit grimy and a little bit of mildew on the fly it looks to be in good shape. I probably won't get years of use out of it, but I think it'll do for at least a season.

Also picked up a pair of Rossi BC 65 backcountry skis... 195 cm, good for a guy my size. $49, never used, but were the victim of a binding mismount... shouldn't be a problem. Nice metal edge, waxless, touring ski for hacking around the woods near home.

Got one of those super-duper butane torch lighters for $4.95... looked to me like someone just never filled it with butane. Looked to be in new condition, got a spark, just got to run out and pick up some butane to fill it and find out.

X-C ski poles, $1.83, a little scratched, but certainly usable.

$4.00 closed cell foam pad 3/4 length... "damaged" well it had a few dents and punctures, just like any closed cell foam pad that's been used once.

I got there just as the doors were opening. It was more of a zoo than normal since it was being held inside only due to the weather. On the plus side, it looked like they were bringing more stuff out as time went on... I think because they just didn't have the space to lay everything out... soooo, there may still be deals to be had. When I left there was an Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1 for $50 with a "hole in the mesh" I'm sure it could be patched quite easily and there was another $34 former rental REI Mountain tent... a bunch of packs that I couldn't get near whilst lugging about 195cm of skis, two tents, and a foam pad.

There are worse ways to spend a rainy Saturday morning!
