Keeping Track of Overall Conditions

Friday morning report, April 23, 2010

A weak upper level trough will work with residual low level moisture today resulting in summit fog, mostly cloudy skies and the possibility of light upslope snow showers this morning. Snowfall is expected to be light though with only a trace to a half inch possible. As high pressure builds behind the exiting trough this afternoon into tomorrow, drier air will begin to work in clearing out fog and clouds above into the overnight hours. Saturday will see the high cresting in which will bring decreasing winds along with slightly above normal temperatures. Skies will start sunny tomorrow but by the afternoon, high and mid level clouds will return in anticipation of the next disturbance expected during the overnight hours.

We went in around 8 am Friday. Sherburne is open 1/3 of the way down (but still skiable the first third.) I fell through right gully just above lunch rocks up to crotch...lots of rocks appearing through the hole. It looked like there was about a foot of snow and no more.

We ended up providing first aid/splinting to a hiker who had fallen, rolled and broken his arm and probably dislocated his elbow. Guy was in jeans and no gloves. duh...

Snow was soft and glamorous. Really nice mashed potatoes. It's getting pretty thin on the right side, though.

Sherburne is effectively toast. The upper third is still open, but is going fast. 3 stretches that "require" walking (one you could get by with expert grass skiing skills). I wouldn't be surprised to see the rope get moved higher in the next couple days.

More notably, between the various stretches of walking and strapping the board to my pack at the bottom of the skiiable section a pair of people who left HoJo's at the same time as me on foot almost exactly matched my pace to the point where skiiers on the Sherburne are directed back over to the TRT.

As far as ravine conditions, left gully, lobster claw, and right gully were seeing most of the action today per the ski-patrol suggestion to stay out of the middle.

Did see one group of three go over/through the lip. There are some small fractures in the snow below the lip. Left gully and Lobster Claw are reasonably bumped up.

There is a little avi debris in the middle of the bowl which further detracts from the awesomeness of any of the center lines.

Beautiful day up there today, not crowded at all, likely because it was forecasted to rain. Hiked up to the summit and skiied the east snowfields to the top of right gully, and down right gully.

Not to blow up anyones spot, and I know it's a sore subject with some, but the west side looks like it is holding snow much better than the east side right now...
