So terrible.
Many positive thoughts to the family.

Seems like a grim outcome is likely....

The reports from yesterday mentioned heavy amounts of running water inside the crevasse, but I think it's somwhat to lookers Right of the usual Waterfall hole.

Another article I found via the Observatory's facebook page yesterday.
http://www.unionleader.com/article/2...WS07/704039941
A friend described it to me as the "perennial crevasse" about a third of the way up the lip that the boot pack typically goes just to the right of.

Looks like it will be days to weeks before they can recover his body:

From what I gathered, they attempted a rope descent into the crevasse to only about 30ft down... couldn't go further due to lack of rope. Looked deeper...guessed about another 20-30ft and could not see any thing further. Body must have gone way down and likely caught i the stream under the ice/snow pack. Search postponed until possibly today but likely it'll be a recovery mission starting tomorrow.
He was a long time veteran of TUX and the area. Could happen to any of us folks!
The big crevasses are a month early!

Ranger Jeff is a tough cookie and if he could get no further into the crevasse, it must have been damned tight!

I think they will go up daily to look into all the crevasses that open below the one he fell into. Unless they have a reason to lower someone in, they probably won't. It's no good risking another life when hope is gone and recovery is the only goal.
The snowpack is already undermined and that undermining process will continue as the running water transports heat under the snowpack. The man's body will probably continue progressing lower in the ever growing cavern under the snowpack. One can hope he will be spotted soon, but it could be a long time.
