MW is also one of the most prominent mtns in the cont. US
I think it is 23rd on the list with 6100+ft of prominence. Surprisingly large.

The amazing thing is that it sees multitudes of summit day trips from West and East Sides. All over Europe, such vert often means an overnight at a hut or rifugio.
The Dolomiti we encountered on our 6000+ day on Piz Boe were stunned to hear we were day hiking it. Guess we had a training advantage, playing in the Whites as we do

Mt. Washington may have 6000 or so of prominence, but remember, it's 4200 vert from Pinkham. That 6000 extends a long distance, covering all of the 4000 footers, etc.

over 4800 from summit to great glen, all downhill. mt adams summit is 4400+ to rte 2.

Almost exactly 5100 to Dolly Copp. All skiable, in a continuous descent.
(Well, okay, I did have to herringbone up ~50' vertical at one point....)

...and a paltry 3588 feet of vert from the Cog Base...with a few stray feet added for the summertime Ammo Trailhead
Then again, Crawford Path starts at 1900', for a gain of 4388'...folks do that and hats off to'em, that's a frikking haul!

It's prominence is measured from Rome, NY, which is the highest low point one has to cross before getting to the next highest point.
As for hiking goes though, if you measure it by it's most popular ascent route, Mt Adams has more gain than Washington. Few people make the trek up the Great Gulf, most start at either the Cog or Pinkham. As mentioned, Pinkham is at about 2000 ft, giving the Tux Trail about 4288 ft to climb. Adams is most often climbed from Appalachia, which is at 1300 ft. With a summit of 5799, this means that the most popular ascent of Adams has about 4500 ft of climbing.

really. and this just goes to show that prominence is essentially a useless statistic. Interesting from a mathematical point of view... but for all intents and purposes of me playing on MTW, I don't care that Rome happens to be the saddle point between MTW and Waterrock Knob.

Just because all of you are too wussy to start your Mt Washington ski tours by first biking from Rome NY is no reason to bust on the prominence stats -- haters!
(Yes, next season I'm going Goran Kropp on all of you ... albeit w/o the rock climbing fatality.)
