Just back from Mt Hood, where I was literally skiing over the rainbow.....
The reports of low snow at Hood are off target - it was a blast, and there was plenty of snow. The snow quality was terrific throughout the week, albeit with a little lava dust. For August it was unbeatable, and immeasurably better than the other option...

Here is the view looking up the glacier from the top of the racing field. It is not as awesome as the Gulf, but it is an unbeatable place to be midsummer.
Lucky for us, we were able to ski all the way down to within a couple hundred feet of the main base lodge (way below the treeline) at the end of each day.
I learned that Mt. Hood got it's name because clouds wrap around it, forming a hood. I don't remember the technical name for it.
