Mt. Hood: The Snow Gods are Smiling

Just back from Mt Hood, where I was literally skiing over the rainbow.....

The reports of low snow at Hood are off target - it was a blast, and there was plenty of snow. The snow quality was terrific throughout the week, albeit with a little lava dust. For August it was unbeatable, and immeasurably better than the other option...

Here's a sneak preview of Mt. Hood from Govie, the mini-skitown just down the road:

This is Mt Hood from the lift at the tree line:

The glacier up close. Most people race on the groomed portion of the glacier. Only a few venture higher. At this time of year skiing above the race fields is not recommended. The entire week we saw only one on the way to the summit with skis...

Lucky for me, going solo, I met another skimumster and her hubby, just my age, almost immediately after arrival. She proved to be a terrific gate basher. And he SKIS TUCKERMAN'S EVERY YEAR! How could I do better than that?

Here is the view looking up the glacier from the top of the racing field. It is not as awesome as the Gulf, but it is an unbeatable place to be midsummer.

Lucky for us, we were able to ski all the way down to within a couple hundred feet of the main base lodge (way below the treeline) at the end of each day.

I learned that Mt. Hood got it's name because clouds wrap around it, forming a hood. I don't remember the technical name for it.

Here is one of Mt Hood's prominences:

The tree issues were different at Mt. Hood's tree line, compared with TR's treeline.

Here are a couple general pics of Oregon in the area around Mt. Hood:

Four of my 5 ski days were perfect "10's". The last day it was cold and very , and we even had a few

Home without any broken bones. The total pharmaceutical count was 6 tylenol. The airport did everything imaginable wrong, as usual, (all my luggage is still in ?????), but who cares... I got to ski in August
