Just Wondering...
If you go skiing and don't post about it, or if you don't post a link to your blog, or you don't sell any of those 9"x12" glossies.. was it worth anything? Did you really go skiing?
If you put up a TR and your rival skiers from the next state don't call you out, was it really worthy of posting? If you post on an internet message board and you're either not trying to further your own idea of your standing in the local community through your own worth, or calling out other peoples lack of worth to increase your potential standing, or fluffing those greater than thou to increase your own standing.. is there a point in posting? Lastly, if you go anonymous on ski message forums, at least regarding the constant mine is bigger than yours attitude, are you still allowed to ski in the daylight? Thankyou and Goodnight.

Good questions though regardless of the answers the benefit is the same to the online skiing and riding community. The ego boast of the internet puts more content online. More trip reports allow for online viewers to best determine where to ski and if the destination has conditions that warrent the effort in the viewers opinion. So regardless of whether any one participates in the ego stroking, the combined effect of any ego influenced increase in reporting certainly helps expose more skiers and riders to what conditions are like and new and interesting ideas about how to pursue the activity and where to slide. Works for me regardless of the answers to the above questions.

In N. Stephensonian terms, T4T is a "reputation server."

It is a reputation server, good analogy.
I like to ski. And I like to write. And I like to take pictures/video. And I like people. So for me, its really that simple....just doing what I like.

Skiing can be a lonely sport. Solitude has certain things going for it that can't be had otherwise, but it is not everything. Whenever, wherever, and however communities of skiers form, it's a nice thing. Of the people I've meet through the online skiing world, I've greatly enjoyed getting to know every single one.
The time and effort put in and quality of some TRs are worthy of magazines in another age, much less blogs and online photo sales. But, good to point out, don't forget to ski for skiing's sake! (in daylight or at night) |

I just ignore the chest thumping and enjoy the view. And what never stops amazing me is; when you meet some of the most obnoxious people on this site, they end up being great guys to hang out with. I miss the old days of this site but regardless this is still a great place to go for recent conditions and stoke. |

Good Post Mad Skier!
On this site it's all about the beeramid. You'll find out someday.
More seriously, if you've already got your stashes and your ski buddies, don't enjoy posting your adventure pics and writing, and don't need the ego stroke, then there's no real need to post reports. Your planks will slide silently in the forest, and happily. ![]() I wasn't born on a plank and wasn't part of any BC sliding community when I started posting on this board. In my experience, building reputation on this forum is a fine way to meet like-minded folks to engage in real adventures - it's not only a cyber chest-thumping party (not to say that doesn't go on too). In short, I'm grateful to Skicdave for what he's created here.

Good post. This site has gone through a similar transformation as many of the online communities I have been a part of over the years experience.
What used to be a small group of friends has gotten bigger and bigger. People feel the need to brag about their accomplishments, and puff their chests out (semi-anonomously). It is the nature of the internet. A lot of egotistical idiots with cheap ISPs. Hell of an anthropological study.
