South Peak - Loon TR
got a couple comps for Loon and headed up today, have never skiied South Peak and was curious about the new 'double black' aka Ripsaw. They got a couple inches of snow out of the storm, we showed up early and got on the first gondi, skiied A-street first run then dipper, hardly anyone there. Everything was groomed, and I mean everything, no bumps anywhere as they must have lost ton's of base during the rain, Cannon is in much better shape with all the trees open, none of the trees are open at Loon. The skiing was hero, 2 inches over groomed, the new double black is a nice cruiser that should no way (in my opinion) be a double black, one section of it is about 30 degrees but only for a few turns. The surface lift that connects the new peak to the older is interesting. The lines at the go-go where looking big when we came back from South Peak, so a few more off North and done.

Maybe one day I'll manage to drive down to Loon, but somehow I doubt it. If I'm driving and paying, I'm going some place really good .... like europe!! How's that for stuck in a rut?

I hit up loon today, using the pass I haven't in over a month. I don't know what is up with the incesant grooming this year but it is absolutely rediculous. If you dont know where to find the goods your out! As for the double black, that must be a joke!

Word has it that there are tons of woods at Loon, in fact more than Cannon. But, I wouldn't know....

my opinion on loon's on-trail woods is rather low. They close them if conditions are anything near sketchy. I can't see them (again, i'm not on scene, this is just a guess) losing enough base to have to close. More likely they got a bit of a crust and patrol didn't want to pull gapers from boston out of the woods all day.
nice tr. i kinda like loon, for what it is.

across the street from loon and know all the o/b stuff there as well as some survivors on patrol, got sick of the lines years ago and other stuff, it changed a lot there, you are on target with when and why they put ropes up (imo), they also do groom everything and don't leave the pow, they would prolly groom the trees if they could..... driven thru the residential section of south peak lately? some $$ in there, with 1/2 acre lots average of $500k for the lot alone, many restrictions on the houses too and other things, crazy .....

"More likely they got a bit of a crust"
actually the untouched stuff was nice, over a foot, but I had to work for it.
