Pico peak 4/19

Pico is like the unloved stepchild of Killington. Despite limited snowmaking, and having been closed for over a month, there is still a surprising amount of great skiing

I skinned up next to this lift. the trail is called Pike and it gets a lot of sun, hence the deterioration. The trails off to the sides are in geat shape.

i grew up skiing pico for almost 20 years and for a full year in college (2002-2003) it was the only place i skied because of their liberal pass checking style and my miniscule finances. i had ALOT of faceshots that year... i felt like i was an alta passholder. my parents still live slopeside. i'm still there pretty frequently.

one thing: the pike actually isn't getting burnt by the spring sun, so much as the winter winds... the west winds scour the convex part of the slope down the middle in the winter, and snow can never stick... that's why KA is often the most blown in place on the mtn after a storm

bonus question: anyone know what KA stands for? a beer for the winner (21+)

second bouns question: which trail (still skied today) was originally cut to serve as a replacement for the original Inferno? double beer (pbr or steel reserve tallboy... your choice) for the winner (21+)

Ahem. Let's get a few things straight here:
1. Pico DOES NOT have fans here on accounta it SUCKS;
b. There is no good terrain there, in fact there are no good tree shots anywhere on the mountain, so don't go looking for them;
iii. It is always ubercrowded and Killington (or Stratton, Okemo or Mt. Snow) am way mo better.

The liberal pass checking policy is over this year - only one you can get on without getting checked is the little triple - time was when you could go trip-outpost-Summit any day of the year.

Remember when the Pike was the premier trail on the hill and often the only one open from the summit? It went by the wayside when they opened 49er and they realized how difficult it was to keep snow on that trail - I don't think they blow it there anymore.
