What kind of shape?
Thanks for such a great wealth of knowledge! I am really getting excited about the possibility of a trip to Tuckerman. It's been in my mind since highschool. Since I'm 35 now, time to get a move on. lol.
What kind of shape do you need to be in for this hike. I'm in pretty good shape from various forms of training, and of course I will be skiing all season. But I haven't hiked at all since I live in Lake Louise in 98. Any thoughts?

1000's of people of all shapes make the trip to the Ravine every year, so I'm guessing that you'll make it just fine. Depending on your gear you'll have somewhere between 25 and 40 lbs on your back (more if you're carrying a lot of beer) so working out the proper carrying rig is key.
The trail to Hojo's is mellow, easy footing and for the most part gradual grades. From Hojo's to the Ravine floor it's a bit more difficult but fairly short. Climbing up to ski is strenuous but you can leave some gear in the Ravine floor and put on your ski boots for that part.
But you've got 5 months to work that out.

Sounds good. Do you put anything in your ski boots to keep them from freezing in to an ice block?

Ice blocks?
If you plan on going up in the winter, you will have other things to worry about than frozen boots.
But to answer your question, they don't really freeze up. The hike into the ravine only takes about 2 hours.

If those boots are clipped into the bindings of those skis lashed to your pack, cover the ankle opening of the boots with a plastic bag and do not use rubber bands to keep the bags on.

Prior to the ol supermarket bag trick as mentioned above, pack em with a few tall boys. Even if you don't drink, the caretaker will ALWAYS be happy to take em.

For someone with no backcountry experience, and who hasn't hiked in 11 years, it pretty much isn't open for skiing until spring.

I hiked it on crutches with no problem last April. No problems that a handful of Ibuprophen couldn't take care of.

Not open to ski till March? You mean they turn you back or not enough snow till then? My question probably bespeaks my ignorance.

These guys are LOADS of help!
The mountain is never closed, however, if you plan to ski before temps start to warm up and the snowpack consolidates (i.e. Spring skiing), you'd best have a solid set of avi skills. While the rangers DO post avi reports everyday in the winter and spring, you will be in avi terrain, and should know how to assess the snow for yourself.
One could argue that you should also have avi skills for Spring skiing, but it also helps that there are usually hundreds, nay, thousands of skiers testing every inch of the snowpack for you.

ya, helps to create an even more dangerous situation up there when joeyland april comes along. april is for resort skiing. the big hill in some spots is so stupidly busy in april. i chose the loaf.
if you stay away from the hordes, you'll be safer and better off.
