Is it the end of ski season for me???
My surgeon was not amused when I came to on Friday afternoon following my emergency appendectomy groggily asking, “When can I ski, doc? I’m supposed to be at Sugarloaf next weekend!” Even before the laparoscopic procedure, I was polling ER docs, surgeons, and anesthesiologists. Funny that all the residents, while thinking it was a crazy idea, led me to believe it would not be utterly impossible. (I even offered to connect the snowboarder ER resident with the Tux community, hoping to bring good healing karma to myself.) The attendings were more against the idea. Was it a cruel game of good cop/bad cop? I had made a B-line from the UMass Med ER, where I was away on business, to my home hospital of DHMC at 4 AM, praying the whole way the appendix wouldn’t burst on the way. The next day I was discharged with a giant distended belly and some good drugs. I chose to decline on the wheelchair assist, as one must walk before she can ski, right?
“I would advise you take it easy for two weeks,” were the surgeon’s parting words. “But you’re gonna do what you’re gonna do.”
Place your bets, friends. And please send healing energy my way!

Little steps, shredding the gnar will have to wait.
Even a simple fall could stress out the healing areas...
Heal fast, but heal well!

Wise words from one who I suspect, knows.
Take care of yourself. The snow will come again.

Just got word from a Jay Peak instructor friend, "It's snowing hard in Burlington." How cruel Mother Nature can be...

Don't be down...we are all hoping Ullr keeps snowing for you!
You must have some post-endo physical therapy connections...check with them, I bet they let you walk increasing mileage on smooth paths right away.
You are very fit, doing the most allowed (by good sense and guidance from professionals with experience with abdominal surgical recoveries) as soon as it is allowed (ibid), will keep a very great measure of your fitness.
Take it easy on the Yoga, dance or other complex movement stuff you do.
Keep it simple and heal soon!

Ahhhhhhh Cheryl,
All the more snow for you to slowly "rehab" up in the E. Snowfields. I hear your name whispered in the blowing snow calling you to "rehab" ..... funny it has May dates and times penciled in. Get better SOOOON !!! There is soooooo much skiing left, plenty for you !! patience is of virtue- youll be smiling, climbing, and sliding on the greatest mountain around before you know it. New skis, new snow its just waiting for you..... dont pull a LPNH move coming back too soon from an injury and put yourself into a situation where youll really miss blocks of time on the mountain- funny hearing that come from me huh ???

Yeah, that IS funny hearing that from you, Lou! Jay has already gotten 16-22" and my new powder skis just arrived - 5 days early!! Sign from God???
Perhaps you ought to head on up and make sure I just sit my butt on the patio outside of Tower Bar while you take laps for me...

My tactic on these issues...
As a guy who's been down & out for 3 weeks with my back out, I can feel your pain sitting around watching the snow pile-up. This is the second 20"+ dump that I have been out of it for! However, the wonders of medicine never cease...After an Epidural injection of an awesome mixture of meds yesterday, I feel better than I have felt in a month! While I feel like I am ready to ski today, I know that would be foolish as I want this feeling of wellness to last.
However, I will be polling docs in my spine group to see what they say about a return to earning turns. I will just keep going down the line until I get an answer I can live with and then I will be out there. Let the pain be your guide, it's there for a reason...If it hurts you shouldn't be doing it. The Loaf may be out for you this weekend, but with a little luck & all that earned good karma, you will be out there again soon! Get well quick!
