TR: 2010 Mount Washington Memorial Day BBQ and Slackfest
I have three days of pix/viddy and will post some as soon as I can. Other folks will be adding theirs too. Here are the bare bones:
Right off the bat..I'm an idiot. Left home in good time and made good time. It was when I went to pay for my campsite that I discovered that I had left my wallet at home. While I frisked the car I noticed that I had also left the grill behind. Fortunately kfarar and efeldborg where in site 81 and said I could camp in their site. On the way up I spotted an INS vehicle inspection unit on I-93 southbound. Going back to get my fogotten items, I used route 3 for a good ways and otherwise blended in in spite of my need for haste. It was midnight when I finally rolled in to site 81.
Saturday morning, waiting at the gate: Kevin and his crew were in the first vehicle in line and mine was next. Skiing ensued, punctuated by grillin' and chillin'. Conditions were rather nice and I was well worn out early. Leaving for the day was hard to do but it was done before 3.
Sunday morning, waiting at the gate: The first vehicles in line were three Qebecois with awesome sport bikes and mine was next. MacD met up with me at the campsite and we doubled up in my Forester for the Auto Road. We had a hellova time getting the skis out of the roof box because the wind was really howling with gusts over 60. We managed it w/o damage to the box, skis or selves. Skiing ensued, punctuated by grillin' and chillin'. Conditions, being almost calm at the snow, and while being cooler, were better than nice. While the company was excellent, there were few people about. I guess folks just don't belive the snowfields are usually well protected from the winds. Anyhow, I was well worn out, a little later in the day. Leaving for the day was hard to do, with the windy conditions up-top making it harder still. Nevertheless, it was done before 3. MacD went off on his way back to Nova Scotia and oneoldtimer camped at site 81
Monday morning, Memorial Day, waiting at the gate: The first vehicles in line were the same three Qebecois on sport bikes, determined to get better views and less wind. This time oneoldtimer's car was next in line and I doubled up with him for the Auto Road. The wind was evident again, but 20-40 mph is about all. Very few clouds were about, and they kindly stayed away all day. Skiing ensued, punctuated by grillin' and chillin'. Conditions, being almost calm at the snow, and while being cooler, were better than nice. I set the First Annual 10th Mountain Memorial Day Slalom on the northern section of the snowfield, off the main line. Many folks ran the course. I was pretty pleased with it's blend of steepness and not being too tight. So many TTipp'ers and T4T'ers were in evidence that it seems to me that it was a very fine Slackfest. oneoldtimer was at the previous weekend's Slackfest, so we have slacked well this year. Leaving for the day was hard to do, and accompanied by much regret that it couldn't last! Nevertheless, it was done before 4.
Anyway I have my racoon face and wonderful company to remember from Slackfest 2010. The slalom was not a race, but some very nifty skiing was done on the course. It's my plan to get in touch with the 10th at Ft Drum and ask about sending them a compilation video from the slalom. I'll wait 'till there's plenty to add together because there were a goodly number of folks getting photos and viddy up there. Ideas and assistance welcome.
Btw: There is a rumor that some embellisment (concerning certain marine dwelling bugs) will be added for next year's MWMDBBQ&S.

Bravo, gentlemen - that is a fine tradition you have going there, and if it didn't coincide with my birthday trip to Cozumel each year, I'd be with you.

Thanks, would have liked getting a better shot looking into the ravine, but was in a rush so that we could get off the mountain before they close the gate.

Even though the winds were rippin at about 60mph on Sunday at the summit, and there was quite the cloud cover, I still managed to get a sunburn! Seven Slackers in all showed up. Memorial Day, was another story. Much less wind, practically no clouds, smoke in the valley, and very much Sun . To top it all off, many more slackers showed up(one of the greatest groups of people in the world), the skiing was great and so were the beverages and food! Photos to follow.

That was clearly some Grade A Fancy Slacking there, and it looks like plenty of snow for the festivities. Can't wait to see more pix and video.
