Mount Osceola Recon

Anybody ever skied Osceola? Was hiking around the base this past weekend, and was pointed in the direction of an older bc ski trail. Although it had substantial grown in, I think it would still be a good ski for the winter given a lot of stuff would be cleared/hidden under snow. I guess the run starts at the top of Osceola and ends up on the lower x/c ski trails by a camp ground of Tripoli road. Interested in checking out since my rents have a place right in WV and access would be very easy. I would assume that the entry point would have to be from Triopli road up the Osceola trail since the East Peak side would probably be a rather technical and scary hike in the winter. Plus I think the Osceola trail would probably be skinable right to the top for the most part. Any help on this would be appreciated!!!!!

Think snow!!!!!!!!

Lots of folks have skied there. There is an old hiking trail on East Osceola. It goes from the current Osceola Trail down to the Greeley Ponds. Shortly after it leaves the active trail it gets onto an East facing landslide scar which runs practically all the way to the ponds.

There are logging roads all through that area, although I hadn't thought any reached either of the Osceola summits.

Yeah I have eyed those slides as well but this is actually on the Tripoli side of the mountain. The end piont is at the camp area right at the base of Tripoli road if your are heading out of WV. Headed back there with my mom this past weekend while I was up there with my family. She and I went for a quick walk with the dogs and she showed me the drop out point. I guess someone who lived up there cut the trail a few years ago and moved away so it has grwon in a little bit. She was saying that it starts at the top of Oceola and end at the camp area. If that is true that would make for a great tree run the whole way down. I am hoping to get up there and duew a little more research. I am going to take a GPS navi point at the bottom and then hike to the top and see where that spot is from there to see if I can find an enterance point. Hope to find something becasue that would be like a 1200-1500' run of glades!!!!!

I was wondering about that east-side slide myself last May when I was heading to Tux. That top-to-bottom thread of white looked very tempting from the road. I was solo and didn't want to tempt fate by heading into unfamiliar woods but good to know that it is passable. Good luck on the other side of the hill!

I have a place in WV. I went up Oceola last summer. I could not find the enterances and exits, although I completed the 15 mile loop from town, going East to West to Greeley. I know the scars that you are talking about and have been scoping them out for years and have only talked to old bus drivers in town about skiing them. I think Tri-Prymid might offer easier access to off pieste. Hiked that the year prior and the trail runs the scars. Keep me informed of your adventure plans, might like to join you.
