personal first descend of Big J

Last week was my first visit to Jay Peak and I had an amazing day. Fresh tracks most of the day in and out of bounds by TB2. Unfortunately I left my AT gear home so I had to skip BJ. Realizing what I was missing I went back with a buddy (Tom) on Friday to give it a shot.

We skied the resort on Friday and tried to locate the gate and gather advise on having a successful tour. Never found the gate so we headed to the bar to hopefully get some assistance. The first person we spoke to (ski instructor) highly recommended we scrap the plan without an experienced guide or partner. SInce I didn't like his advise we moved on. The next fellow was a BC guide but was not avaibale on Sat but he gave us all the info we needed to give it a shot. The third person (waitress/guide) also gave us some advise and the green light, so Sat morning off we went.

Since Tom snowboards we rented a pair of snowshoes just incase we get "sucked in". Best decision we made all day. The snowshoes also helped the hike along the ridge. The snow started to come down heavy two hours prior to our arriving at the trailhead at the summit of J so all fresh tracks were gone. Not helpful for first timers. Fortunately the entrance gate was exactly how our friends in the bar described it and then there was the sign to welcome us to BJ. So here is our tour in photos

the snow field "that sucked us in"

boot to knee deep

woo hoo

my favorite shot. The photo is SOOOOO BAD it looks like a water coloring.

after getting sucked in we had to hike back up a little bit to the plateau and hike south. Knowledge from the bar and renting the snowshoes paid off here

a wonderful site when you think you are lost

Tom gearing up again for the traverse right and final run out on the Luge

A great first run of Big J. Hope to be back soon.

Thanks Andy, the two people who gave us the thumbs up seemed to have more experience and knowledge then the one who didn't which is why we went.

We got sucked into the stream by going for one last great run of uncut knee deep pow. As soon as we came to the end we saw the stream and knew we went too far. WE were forced to cross over to the north side of it but knew we had to go south. WE hiked a little bit along to stream and came across a track (maybe two skiers) that truned left (east). We knew this was the wrong way so we crossed back over the stream and headed south. We then decided to hike up a small incline which put us on the plateau. We then traversed south across the open field, hiked up another 25' incline and hit the traverse trail. Tom put his board back on (thankful for having the snowshoes) and we skied the rest of the way down. The slip up was well worth the turns

Keep "slipping up" in those parts and you'll find more fun than you can shake a pole at.

Nice report!

Glad you had fun. Next time, make it mandatory for everyone to have at least skins or snowshoes. Walking out would be brutal with a deep snowpack! Nights are very cold up here.

I had skins and my buddy had shoes so we were protected, plus we had time on our side. Ran into one guy on the trail who had borrowed gear. It turned out that one of his skins was mounted backwards. He was bummed.

I know. But you mentionned your buddy decided to rent. By that, i understand that you might have tought to get by without them.

Gotcha, This was my buddies first venture into the BC so he didnt want to buy them until he tried it out. He now is looking to buy a pair. I think he is hooked. We will be in Revelstoke next week so I think I just found a partner for a day in Rogers Pass
