Search for Missing Snowboarder--April 25, 2011
by Mount Washington Avalanche Center on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 10:40am
We're currently involved in a search for a missing +/- 30y.o. male snowboarder who was last seen by his partner yesterday below Tuckerman Ravine at 11:20a.m.. He was wearing an orange jacket, red pants and a black helmet. He had snowshoes and ski poles but no crampons or ice ax. If you were on the mountain yesterday (Sunday, April 24, 2011) and saw someone matching this description above the floor of the ravine please let us know. You can file a report with our ranger station at (603)466-2713 extenstion 0. We are busy with lots of incident coordination right now so please only call if you have a solid report. Thanks!

"Officials said Massicotte might have become lost because of reduced visibility from fog above the tree line. At the summit of the ravine, he went south instead of east and ended up in the Oakes Gulf area."
wow. wow.

But he found a trail and stuck to it....map and compass might have helped...he accidentally picked the longest way out.

Goodness. I'm just happy to hear that he's alive. It's easy to judge when you know the area. Just sayin'.

yup i got one. i'm not the only one. countless times i've encountered folks from north of the border lost up there and asking for help in broken english.
just this past december, on the west side, it was -11 degrees in the lot as i was booting up in the lot to head up to the easties when two haggard looking frenchies luckily came trudging down asking me if they had reached pnvc! i asked them where they started. THEY TOLD ME PNVC!!!!!!***!?
they got lost in a storm overnight when they had tried to summit the day before. so then they asked me how do they get back. i pointed down the base station road and told them to start walking and hitch back.
and then there's those slowshoers i saw in the ravine in mid march trying to slowshoe up hockey rink right gully which turned into an evacuation.
oh i could go on and on. then i have to deal with em all summer at our surf breaks. most of em just get in the way and have no clue of proper ettiquette out in the water.
other than that, they are ok!

See Rog, i could say pretty much the same about people from Mass... It all depends on who you encounter... Most people i know from Mass are good people... but those that i don't know sometimes stand out from the crowd... and end up in the paper.
Kind of like the "green license plate"-thingy about spring in NH...
It's all a matter of respect for others and the experience you get out there.
But please, don't get me started on those "south of the border" folks who think it's alright to come to the Chic-chocs and not being able to speak a word of French... i can spot these guys from miles away!

hey, no need to speak french in the gaspe. we don't even need to try. the girls at the gite speak perfectly good english, as do the grocery store clerks in st. anne dumont. even the owner of chez bass speaks english and loves it when us southerners come rolling in to talk skiing. great burgers too!
the frenchies are still the ones getting lost and rescued in the chic chocs too!
love the neon btw.

I resent that.
