Photo - Tux 6-8-11

For those of you who are contemplating some turns in Tux this week, here's a composite photo of what it looked like yesterday (Wednesday). More snow than last year at this time, some scary undermining, and swarms of black flies. I'll post more details and photos tonight.

Thanks for the pic. I'm looking to get back up there this Sunday.

How did the throat on Sluice look? Last weekend it was still solid and I'm hoping it will still be like that this weekend.

Don't count on it. It looks OK on the surface, and someone did ski it yesterday, but each day the undermining increases, so by Sunday you'll need to be very careful in your assessment.

u didn't go to the top? 2 bad I put in an awesome platform (via shovel), where the snow runs out, climbers right.. anyways the blackflies drove me away after 1 run.. No other people, not even hikers, cloudy, low winds and warm, I got blackfly victimized, in the mouth, nose, eyes, ears..

Didn't need fixin', just supplementation I was referring to JAS71, who got there just as I was finishing, and skied it. The platform would have been nice.

I've never been attacked as severely by black flies as yesterday. Fortunately I had a long sleeve shirt, but I still have hemorrhagic spots all over my arms. On my video clips, you can see all these tiny gray spots swarming in front of the lens. I think my sunscreen was somewhat deterrent around my face, but it was still wise to keep one's mouth shut.

I saw only a handful of hikers on my way down. There was a group of French-speaking students congregating at Hojo's when I got there - probably campers who went back down early.

my bad

thought u meant "yesterday" as the day, before u were there.. I was rocking shorts and t-shirt, I got destroyed, yesterday all the bites were stinging, today they are itching.. I still feel like I'm being attacked.. prolly my last day in the woods anywhere sans the bike for a bit.. skeeters, ticks, blackflies are crazy up my way now too..

Darned black flies!

The only thing giving me second thoughts about Tux are the black flies! The only exposed areas I had last Saturday were around my knees and the back of my neck. My officemates think I have boils on my nape!

I recall, not so fondly, running down an abandoned railroad right-of-way for a work project, with my boss waving a cigarette around like mad to try to smoke out the deerflies.

The blackflies were absolutely vicious last Sunday... but I got a late start on things this year - twice to Gulf of Slides in April, once to Tux in May. I gotta get out while it's still there! Damn the flies, I will be back this weekend.

Nice meeting you!

After you left, I only saw three other skiers after lunch and two hikers. Other than the bugs, it was a very empty bowl. The spray I put on kept them from biting me too much, but they were omni-present.

My reminders of the day are the sunburned backs of my legs, from the boot line to the short line! Didn't think I'd need sunscreen there...

Not all of the undermining / crevassing was bad. I found a nice spot in the center of the bowl to enjoy a slice of cold pizza for lunch:

Likewise. Glad you had a good day. I'm about to post a report with some more pictures. Check it out.

Good idea. I have a box of cigars in the office that can be put to good use!

That's better than my reminder: bite marks around my knee (yup, just the knee) and neck. My officemates think I have boils.
