Slackfest?
Is Slackfest this weekend 5/12-13? Inside word on the road being open to the summit in time?

Partial Drive?
Is it a good plan to drive to treeline then lug skis to the top of the snowfields?
On the phone, their official line is that they "don't allow you to ascend further on
foot". Did the full climb last week for some great turns but will have a couple party members this week that may not be up to the whole hike.

The AR doesn't allow parking at the turnaround! There are brake cooling turnouts with marked spaces lower down, but they probably don't like folks long-term parking there either.
Wait for the to summit opening!
BTW, Lynchdogger, if the road ain't open, how could it be Slackfest? Slackers don't hike almost 4000 vertical feet to ski 350 feet, now do they
It looks like 19th and 20th are the first w/e days. If the road is open and the following week looks like a disaster for the snow, there will be Slackfest A & B. "A" will be 19th and 20th with "B" being 26th, 27th and 28th. The 10th Mountain Memorial Day Slalom will be set up on the 28th.

Thanks, RR,that's about what I figured. Guess we'll just HAVE to stay over at HoJo's. :-) I won't mind carrying 2 pairs of skis/boots over Lion Head if the skiing's half as good as last weekend.
And if there's gonna be 2 Slackfests we can at least draw this out until June.

100% agreed!
Will be there with child #2 and pup at least and possibly the whole family if I can convince the two slackers in the clan. Will bring a bunch of DPS demo skis for folks to take a spin if interested. Look forward to it and hoping for a bluebird day. Beers and bbq! Will be nice to connect with folks.

Just saw this on the Auto Road Facebook page:
"Arrgghhh....winter returns...we're closed today due to snow as low as 3,000'. We should be able to return to treeline operation for the weekend. Opening to the summit for the 19th is beginning to look doubtful since the weather has not cooperated nearly as much as we need to get repairs done on Five Mile and Six Mile. We'll keep you posted...hw"

Slacking may have to wait for the Memorial Day W/E...
I hope the snow hangs on that long!

I think I'll go renew my passport...I was waiting for the road to open, but... It expires on May 31 and I want to have the new one for the first weekend of June.
Oh yeah, we didn't need a Passport to cross back in 1992 or 2006.

Taking about the bright side...when are they going to put the webcam back to where it was before???

Due to capital improvements at Wildcat Ski Area, Mount Washington Observatory's "Ravines Cam" was relocated in July of 2011. In the short term, the camera's new location will not have direct views of Tuckerman Ravine. When Wildcat Ski Area completes its facility work at the summit, the camera's settings will be restored and images of Tuckerman Ravine will return. Thank you for your patience.
|
What is short term? That webcam is extremely useful for determine how much snow is left for potential July turns.
