Tux wasn't quite dead yet 4/23/2012

Not much of a ski trip, but there was plenty of free parking at Pink's.

We hiked up Friday morning and cauht a (nearly) bluebird day. It was tee and shorts weather on the Tuckermans Ravine trail. There was no sign of snow on the trail until the long bridge before Ho Jo's, then bare rock again from Hojo's to the base. The advise of the day was to stay to the left of center. Big blue bits of ice were visable to the right, and just waiting for an excuse to come crashing into the lunch rocks. The Bell of the Ball was left Gully. the snow was soft but there was plenty of it for the race on Saturday.
Just to the right of that, skiiers were being chased to the sides by runnels.
After that, it was a long walk out. W were told that the Sherb was little more that a long brown wet spot, and didn't even go over for a look.

There was sparce snow visable on Wild Cat, so we went over there Saturday morning for a closer look There were a few small spots to huck a few turns near Catapult. Saturdays weather was again beautiful turning to rain later after noon.

Sunday was rain all day.

The buzz was that someone leading a trip went into a crevas under lip, and was never seen from again. Sad to think that someone's kid might have seen him accept the Darwin award, but there were plenty of warnings.

Not the best mid-april trip that I've ever seen, but still better than a day at work.

See you all next Spring,
Love
MI

You're not from around here are you?

Honestly, the gentleman who died may not have heeded a few signs, but let's not make light of his death. If you had any forethought or did any research you would understand that he was actually competent and accidents just happen.

Glad you had a good day hucking turns.

in this case the accident didn't just happen. the "competent" feller was climbing in an area with open holes that had been warned about on pretty much every written advisory for the weeks or so leading up to the "accident".

one look up at that area would tell most seasoned, competent people that it probably wasn't such a good idea. heck, i won't ever climb up that even in perfect condition when there's a much safer, better option up right gully whether it has snow or not.

Seems like old buzz. That it is continuing to be talked of by folks in the Ravine is good. A little extra focus goes a long way.

I'm guessing that with all the rain, this unfortunate dude might be liberated from the snowpack very soon and be on his way to a proper final resting place.

Don't want to criticize, but will say that when I first heard of this accident my first thought was, "what the hell was anybody doing in that spot in the first place?" But alas, everyone's risk tolerance is different, for better or worse.

Kinda weird to think that he's been under there when all the while people have been enjoying Tuckerman's various pleasures.

I agree with everything you just said. I've been thinking about how weird it would be to be in the bowl with him still entombed in the snowpack. I only hope for his family that Tux releases him soon.

Real solid reporting. Bluebird is a real treat.

Re: Dying. If you want to not get hurt or die having fun, sell your ski gear and start a life of playing D&D in your basement. Or live a life worth living. Myself, I'll roll the dice a time or two by venturing outside to have lived a life worth living.

You forgot to add. "Always wear a helmet, even when going to get the mail or taking a bath."

Don't believe he was in " that area". Believe he fell into "that area".

The mountain makes the choices, not you. Right, rog? (GOS last year?)

On a side note, would a helmet have helped him? Not unless it had a built-in beacon.

It all comes down to brains, people. And Karma. And luck.

Be careful out there.

i made choices that got me into that. i knew full well of the potential danger. i dropped in knowing it was suspect. my partner stayed put above till i had a look. once i realized my hunch was right, i stuck with plan "c" and stayed alive.

my incident wasn't just an, "o fvck" slip up deal. it was more like "o fvck" thought this might happen, deal with it. i dealt with it. i made choices that got me out of it. luck? sure. whatever.
