5/2 LG was AMAZING
So I don't have much time for a full TR, or too download photos, as I'm on my way to work as we speak, but I didn't have work yesterday so I headed up to the bowl
HH was atrocious. I was concerned for my general safety, with all the undermined snow. Hiked 5-600 vertical only snowboarded 300 vertical. Snow wasnt so great there either, I could tell nobody was there for at least a few days. Damage from Irene was increbile. And not "boulder hopping" but the "boulder climbing" to get there wasn't fun, but was an adventure.
LG was a different story. There was patches of fog rolling in and out from 1-3. Falling ice was loud, and when the fog was set in with the sound of ice, just being there was scary! Coverage of LG was great. The top cornice wasn't icy. And with a total count of 9 people the inch of snow we got was still fresh. Right when I topped put the fog rolled away, and for a brief moment I had my first "above the clouds" view. Spectacular. The ride down was soft and forgiving, setting a hard edge gave way to little wet sluffs, but I felt comfortable.
Drove 200 miles there, and back, in the same day, hiked 9-10 miles with a 60 pound bag, had my car battery die at Pinkham notch (thank god for manual I kick started her with a kind push of two big men) and I was awake for 20 consecutive hours......absolutely worth ever inch of energy!
If weather doesn't change drastically, get out there and enjoy it!!!

Nice glad you made it! Tis a 15hr round trip for me, but always totally worth it I love setting up base camp at Hermit Lake and spending a few days midweek, but was not in the cards this year w/ the toddler. Soon I'll be bringing him w/ me... glad you got yours and post up those pics!

Pretty sure I saw you as soon as we pulled into pinkham, but I didn't have any jumper cables to help out.
Was my second day up on the East Snowfields this week. Monday morning was bluebird and POWDER! Spent 8 hours on the summit cone. Saw rog drop left and chute from up above.
Yesterday was a great day above the clouds. Snowfields were fresh creamed corn up top, some fun slough and rollerballs to dodge. Made the traverse around the top of the bowl. Left gully was still soft after 4:00 in the shade. Snow rode soo smooth, I didn't even stop to catch my breath until the bottom.
Chute was continuous t2b, the cracks in the upper section were covered up. Looked like everyone avoided it yesterday so it's still smooth.

Slackers are tracking Snowfields vert. What's your idea of current vert of the Easties?
Top Levels:
Right From the road?
Just a bit below the road?
Lots of rocks between the road and the snow?
Bottom Levels:
Down to and way past the Alpine Garden Trail?
Down to the Alpine Garden Trail?
Down to the ground just a bit above the Alpine Garden Trail?
Down to the ground a long way above the Alpine Garden Trail?
Slackfest may depend on your answer...
No Pressure

Sno rider you must've been in the group of 3 boarders ahead of me? I thought I'd see you in the ravine, was wondering where you went lol. It's funny, I guess it's 2012 so NOBODY carries jumper cables anymore!! This includes myself, so no hard feelings to you
I haven't been to the easties, don't really know how to, and don't want to wonder around
If slackfest is on a weekend this year I'll have to bring buy dead animals on sticks and cold brews
I'll get pics up tomorrow morning no work

The Annual Mount Washington Memorial Day BBQ and Slackfest has been on Memorial Day w/e, with the Memorial Day 10th Mountain Slalom on the Monday of the holiday w/e.
Naturally, any time the auto road is open to the summit and there are skiers willing to ski what the mountain has kept for us, slackers flock to the mountain. Slackfest is a loose term that way....but the Mother of all Slackfests involves grillin, coolers, children and dogs... A couple hundreds of folks was the biggest crowd. That was in 2008 with 2009 being pretty good too. Usually it's on Memorial Day w/e.....there was some concern about cover and possibly moving it closer to Mother's Day.
Out West they have Drinko de Mayo (that's at A-basin)...and one of these years I'm going....it looks like a major scene! Here in the East we have Slackfest and it depends on the Auto Road being open.
It's not an official event...but it is fun.

That 10th Mountain Slalom is a Memorial Day event, also unofficial, held in honor of the US Army 10th Mountain Division. Founded in response to WWII, served with great sacrifice and distinction and in the bargain, the 10th came back to the states and taught the wider public that they could go skiing. There's a lot more to that story. I think most skiers/riders would be interested to discover how that began and what has transpired since.
The first of thse slaloms was during Slackfest 2010. The first of these titled Mount Washington Memorial Day BBQ and Slackfests was held in 2008.
Slackers have been bringing lawn furniture, Grills and Coolers for many more years than that.
Here's the first slalom on viddy:
