Trip Report East Snowfields - 5/21/2012

Trip Report: As far as I'm concerned, this season is not yet over.

I brought along 2 friends who had never skied Tux before. We had two options: a) hike in and do one to two runs on Left Gully; or b) take the slacker route and drive up the Auto Road to yo-yo the East Snowfields. The prospect of making more turns won out on this gorgeous day and we drove up Otto.

The snow was nicely corning up and there small bumps along the way. No icy patches and the snow was delightfully smooth and soft. The patch of snow we skied on was probably as wide as the length of one and a half basketball courts and had a vert of probably 200-300 yards (I'm lousy at distances so this is probably inaccurate). The initial section of about 150 yardscurves to skiers' left and the final pitch goes on for another 100 yards. It was great game trying to get as many turns in. The bootpack was nicely set with short easy steps. We went for about 6 or 7 runs then called it an afternoon at around 2. On the drive down, we stopped to take photos of the Great Gulf. I could see that there was snow in Airplane at the ridgeline but could not see how far it stretched down. Could be promising but no guarantees. The "Beach" looks good too.

We headed back to Pinkham Notch then went for the second leg of the adventure -- a hike up to Hojo's. At Hojo's, we peaked into the Ravine. Looks like LG and Chute are still skiable. I'm hoping for a decent amount of vert in Sluice in June to stretch out this season one day more. It's been a crummy season, I know, but, from my perspective, it's the season that refuses to end.

Wow...that makes it a good long day when you stopped skiing at the snowfields at 2. Skee you in June?

Thanks for Beta. I'm actually wondering that I might be tempted to head up Otto in 12 days and have the family with me (and not ski). My oldest can't hike, she overwalked this weekend and her knee was hurting. She in physio as she broke her tibial spin and when through surgery in February. I guess it going to be a wait and see (for snow, family and my oldest's rehab).

Not a long ski day at all. We started skiing at around 11 so we got in three hourse of good solid work. We had enough energy for a hike though.

Sorry to hear about your oldest's injury. Young people heal quickly and completely. She'll be carving turns in no time! As per SM-in-Tux tradition, the downhike from HoJo's yesterday was accompanied by another skier regaling me with stories about injuries and unbelievable accidents. Just my luck.

BTW, I am heading to Montreal this weekend. First time.

When and where? I can give you some pointers and places to see or avoid unless you want to see some action (bring your goggles to protect your eyes from the tear gas (no kidding, well sort of).

Unfortunately I have to be in Ottawa this weekend, but I'll be down dealing with my mom's place on late Thursday/Friday.

I guess you didn't read my blog regularly.

She was skiing really great this season too. Only second season racing. She's small. 70 lbs and 14, but had a great form.

Two weekends prior to her injury: Slalom at Cascades and GS at Ste-Marie.

It was pretty swanky to drive up, park and do some laps. First time doing that.

Guilty as charged.

I think I have some June turns left in me.

Nice to meet you! Did you go over to the smaller snowfields on hikers' right? I was asking my friends where you disappeared to. Yeah, driving up can be addictive. See you up there again!
