Season
The 'Ski Season' may not be over everywhere, but it is over in the ravine. I postulate that the first snow up there is technically the beginning of the season (as we have proven beyond doubt that last snow is the end of the season)
So for the next few months it's not ski season. Can't wait to be on the downhill site of this season.

Very well said M@. That basically means ski season is over everywhere on the east coast, south of the Canadian border . Im not so sure theres even any snow left thats skiable thats reachable by car then hike anywhere north of the Canadian border . Newfoundland doesn't count, because you have to take a boat as well. I've also heard that the snow stays very long into the summer, esp in good snow years, which it was a much snowier year up there than here this past winter.

I would have to agree with you M@, and that first snow is not too far off. The summit will probably get some snow at some point in september-early october at the latest, and the ravine might get a dusting just a few weeks later. I know this has been brought up before (I believe Affix Snow said something), but what is the earliest that anyone has ever skied the ravine, or the earliest that you've heard of anyone skiing the ravine? I might consider going up for a trip on my birthday, Dec 5, as long as there's a decent amount of snow. It might be cool to ski between the rocks, like some of the pix I saw that HB took from May 31st. He skied on his bday, why can't I?

Yep the season is over north of the border too cept for whistler but they don't count..... The ice finally went off the lake this weekend. No more chopping holes in the ice for water.

Well skibum, you could always scrape some ice out of the allagash ice cave in maine and get enough for a turn or so... I've heard that cavers haul ice out of there all summer for their coolers.

Baffin Island should count because kiting between camps sounds so cool! In that case, the season is not over

Sounds like a lot of work, when you can just go to the corner store and buy a couple bags of ice for a couple bucks...

Cool my birthday is Dec. 6th.
Yup winter is over, no snow here either, plus the igloo melted last week. Currently drying out my stuff and patching the ol' lean to.

Elwood, the ice caves are quite far from the corner store.. a 4? or so hour drive on dirt roads, then canoe across allagash lake then a hike to the cave.

I'm not sure where I'd put the end/beginning of ski season in tucks. The snow in tucks is usually gone late july/early august. The summit averages measurable frozen precipitation in every month except August. In July it avg's an inch or 2, august is just a trace, and then sept is back up to several inches. Tough to put a date on it since it can snow there any time of year.

As Dave has so elloquently put it, the season involves skis and/or snowboards. Therefore, snow on the mountain doesn't signal the start of the season nor does the lack of it signal the end until either glisse is proved or becomes impossible.
Let's astroturf the suckka and go sliding
NOT!
Let it

I had an unusual dream last night: I was with my family at Disney World, and suddenly it started to snow... fortunately, I had my skis with me, clicked in and was able to ski several rides (rollercoasters and that African safari tour) before the snow melted.
Very odd, since I don't really think about Disney World very often (frequency << 1 in 5 years).

I dreamed I got married and my best man was a robot... A boxy metal robot with lights on it's head.. wierd...
Seriously... It's gotta be snow to be skiing... for me...
As far as your DW dream - I've been to places like Camelback and Mountain Creek down here that have Alpine Slides... And often wondered what it would be like to ride them - with snow in them... Probably get killed...

Much fun....but you should do it on your last run...they love to clip tickets for that sort of thing. The one we poach is an Intrawest Resort in Ontario and the tracks fill in but the path through the trees holds snow and has some fun switchbacks.
