I think there are 3 shelters with the sliding doors. It's a huge benifit when the wind is blowing hard.

A well build snow shelter is wind proof and much warmer than those wooden shelters. Igloos are hard to build but totally awesome to sleep in....after the next snowfall or windy day they are almost invisible!

So should I build an igloo on a tent platform???
How about the other shelters...? I've heard the snow piles up in front and they essentially become four sided...

I've stayay on the tent platforms a few times. Though they havn't been much in the ways of platforms. They've been solid ice everytime i've stay there.

Given the choice between
1. Building an Igloo
2. Digging a snow cave
3. Setting a tent up on the tent platform
4. Unrolling a sleeping bag
I'll take option 4 most of the time.

Some of them do that, still a tad breezy in the shelter, but not too bad.
The last few times I went I was able to use the 4 sided shelters, but on several occaisions I used some cord (100 feet in two sections) to stitch the tarp into place. An 8x10 tarp is adequet to make one corner of the shelter very habitable without a tent on an icy fall day....but a tent is better in winter

One windy year some boy-scout types rigged up a big tarp on the front of our 3 sided shelter and the noise it made kept me up all night. It wasn't tight enough I guess, cuase it would go "wrinkle, wrinkle, whinkle" then you'd hear a moment of silence and a gust of wind and then "BANG" the thing would snap like a sail when you're coming about. Actually... that was the year of the snore, and the tarp was only responsible for keeping me awake for the 15 min that the snoring wasn't keeping me awake.
Looking back it was all kinda comical and I'd love to have a recording of the sounds in that leanto...
SNOOOOOORRRRRE... SNOOORE... (the kind of snore with the clogged up nose you just wanna jam a pipe cleaner into to stop it) SNOORE <lip smaking>
Crinkle... crinkle....
<silence>
SNAP! SNOOORE! Cough cough...
Giggle... giggle... giggle... <boy scouts>

Breeze... I'll bring a tarp...
I've used tarps before in the shelters... They work really well...
Except because of the sound of the winds hitting the tarp - I was dreaming I was sleeping on a sailboat all night..... Not a bad thing...
