Ruling needed!

"Skied" Tuck's yesterday with wife and 2 daughters (their first time, my second - if circa 1976 still counts). Hiked to Hojo's where it was sunny, -40 degrees and 120 mph wind. (At least seemed that way - actually 26 degrees with steady 10-20 mph wind). Reviews from several people coming down were discouraging - lots o' ice - so we put on our skis and headed down Sherburne.

Here is my question. For years now my wife and girls have been collecting pins as souvenirs from places we ski. Its a pretty good collection, all over the West, NE, Canada, a few in Europe - lots of fun to look at it. Our rule is you have to ski ONE run at an area to be entitled to get a pin.

Does Sherburne count?

(Obviously all moot because there are no pins to buy, but its the principle of the thing).

IMO, The Sherburne counts as a run on Mt Washington. I bet you can find a Mt. Washington pin somewhere. Surprised there isn't one for Tucks at Pinkham Notch Visitors Center.

Glad you and your family got the chance to get out there.

Personally, for principal, I'd have to at least ski or ride part of the ravine itself(even if it's just the bottom part of it) to count it towards a tuckerman ravine pin. But that's me.

I like your tradition.

Technical you didn't ski Tuckerman Ravine itself, but you did ski at the area known as Tuckerman Ravine... just one of the lower (and only) trails.

No pin, but be sure to pick up your Euro at the trail head...

I'd say it counts because you made the smart NoGo decision by cause of the weather

If you slogged your gear to hojo's and were turned away by weather, then yes it definitely counts.

I'ld say you HAVE to go back up there again. And again.... And again.... until it feels like you've skied Tuckerman Ravine.

Now Dave made a good tech point about you not having gone the extra mile up INTO the Ravine. Therefore my 0.02 is you don't get the pin for Tuckerman BUT you DO get a pin for Mt Washington!

Your kids would get a kick outta the bowl and it's ambience... it's pretty neat. But my hats off to you for making the tough choice of turning back. Not many are strong enough to do that.

You see.... not 'earning' the pin for Tuckerman Ravine provides a perfect excuse for having to come back up!

Without a doubt it counts enough for a pin.

Now I still assert that Tucks hasn't been fully experienced until one comes down from above the bowl. Lip, Chute, Center headwall whatever. Those are the runs that keep falling away from you until until they feel impossibly steep and give the "butterflies" in the stomach.

Left gully also qualifies but only when skiing from above the cornice.

Hillmans doesn't

If I don't get those 'butterflies' anymore....does it mean I'm dead? I don't get them anymore..... ONLY if I hucked off center icefall wall(or whatever that's called) do I get them. Maybe I'm too used to steeps? Weird huh? I think I better talk to .

That's an excellent point. I wasn't looking at it that way. Therefore, I retract my 1st statement & award you with 2 pins - 1 for Mt Washington & the other for Tuckerman Ravine!

Bummer.....

But you did get them at one time. To me that is the essence that makes Tucks special to folks. That trepidation and then sense of accomplishment...

Exactly! There is nothing that compares to that feeling! The anticipation on roller coaster rides doesn't match The Tuckerman Tingle. It's got that extra edge of "Will I make it down in one piece or will I ?" I think it's more intense because of the very real danger of physical damage can happen to you. I miss that. Kinda like adrenelinitis?

Please do!

It got me back in 1980 when I 1st took Left Chute on a serious cornice and the memory has stayed with me ever since.

Thanks all for the thumbs ups; I needed to hear from the aficionados.

I will say that one of the best parts of the trip was back at the car when my daughter said "We'll have to try that again". 15 yo and hard-core - I've done something right.

Although DSS might take her away if I let her stay at a shelter overnight.
