Makes me feel a lot better about turning around in King Ravine...that description of the firm layers etc is just so familiar!!!!

That was crazy......
Im just wondering how they planned to get over that 50ft cliff in the chute where he got caught anyway....you can see it in the one pic.......looks nasty......
Its a shame and im glad he is ok, but it looks like bad route finding too....then again what do i know.

Yikes!
Obviously, two experienced BC travellers. In reading both accounts, they both seemed to have (in general) a conservative, safe trend in decision making. Their introspective analysis of why that didn't happen in this case is rather eye opening. Nice of them to take the courage to examine their actions publicly.
What else can I say. Wow!

Oh my...that'll make me think twice about venturing into the backcountry, esp. avi terrain. Glad all were okay.

"let me esplain.. no there is too much, let me sum up":
Two guys w/much skill and experience skin into awesome terrain and are aware of a possible avvy threat...maybe they start an hour late, maybe that doesn't matter.
The first guy drops in and is having a good time when a crown (big, like 3 feet) opens behind him and the thing slabs, quickily gaining speed, with him on it...breifly, then he is IN it and totally helpless but still swimming...
the slide passes a choke and a bigger crown opens below the choke (much bigger) by now the slide is really moving fast. His pal looses sight of him and seconds later the slide flows over a 50' cliff. The skier gets ejected over the cliff and past the jagged rocks at its base then comes to rest partly on the surface of the debris and not fully conscious. Consussed and banged up he flails long enough to extricate himself and do some situation-assesment
The friend risks the hang fire and checks from the top of the cliff. Can't get down from there and climbs back up to go around. An hour later he finds his friend and does an assesment revealing injuries and lots of busted or missing gear. Then they have an epic retreat on one pair of skis in the mushy snow.
Man it doesn't get much closer!
