Camping Question

Ok,

As we might know I got a dog 3 weeks ago, hes a 6 year old Flat Coated Retriever *I just found out* Hes great, dosent bark, chew on my stuff or pull and hes house broken !

I really want to get out and do some camping, but have never camped with a dog before. So heres my question or request.

How do people do it, Camp with their dog?

Does he sleep in the tent with you, if so I need a bigger tent.

What do people do?

Our dog Lego sleeps in the tent with us. We have a huge tent when we camp with the kids so it's no big deal, but even in a little tent, a dog doesn't take up too much room.

Kayden sleeps in our tent... It's a small tent too. It's a Kelty Quartz 2 (hey good price!) she's 75lbs with long legs. It's a tight fit but she keeps us warm

It's prolly not a good idea to let a dog sleep anywhere else with bears cruising around and all...

I might be headed up to the White Mtns next Friday and Sat Night, and take a trip to tux with Tucker !

It will be his first trip that I know of !

Make sure that where you are going is 'dog friendly'. All of the Maine Whites are but in NH some places are a bit fickle... i.e. hermit lake shelters.

Ya I always bring my dog into the tent when our family goes camping, you just need to remember to bring the doggy chow...and some water for him, esp. right now, its 98 degrees outside!

lets hope next weekend isnt as hot.

I sat inside all day in the AC board out of my mind.

It was sooooo Hot today.

It reached 100F and with the humitity it was killer ! Dew Point was around 78 or somthing like that...

Everywhere Cool Paw Luke and I camped, which was very often.... he always stayed in the tent with me (and whomever I had as a guest). You may want to cut out a 3' x 3' foam pad(link rest or other thin pad) for the pooch to claim as his own. Cool Paw had the knack of pushing me off my Thermarest until I got him his own pad. During the day you can use that pad as a seat for yourself on the trail.

Another tent issue to remember..... try to keep puppy dry a few hours before retiring to the tent... there's nothing worse than a wet muddy smelly dog inside. Tromping through mud and such may be unavoidable but do rinse off the feet if needed.... your tent will be easier to clean and last longer. Get him use to that before too long... they'll learn to appreciate it.

Get a floppy/collapsable waterbowl for him and always bring it with you on the trail, etc. Often when we stopped on a mtn top, there wasn't any stream or pool for him to drink from while we rested.

Beef Jerky while on the trail is the ultimate reward/treat for a pooch... use it sparingly. Note how much food pooch'll eat before going out camping and then add a little more. Something about being out in the fresh air and all that exercise brings out the appetite.

Have fun! Oh yeah.... if pooch needs to take a leak.... make sure it's not ON THE TENT. And take him out for a short walk. He may not be familliar with camp life and wander off. First time Cool Paw and I camped... he peed on it. He didn't do that ever again.

Our Tucker sleeps in the tent with us. We have a 2 man tent (non-low profile) that we take backpacking. He's only 50 lbs., but his legs are sooooo long. He doesn't have his own Thermarest, we try to keep ours together and have him sleep in the middle. He's very good, and never goes far from camp.

And, no, he hasn't peed on the tent YET.....

Enjoy your new bud. Spoil him, exercise him, hug him, spoil him some more......

I camp with 2 dogs, It's a little much having then in the tent with me. They are dirty & wet, they stretch out the side wall of your tent, plus you will be breathing in dog hair all night "don't inhale" Dog's are well equipped for the night air they keep the camp safe and it gives then a sense of duty, you don't want a overly needy dog in the back-country. As Porter & Izabella my 2 dog's have gotten older I have became softer and I now carry a tarp tent system for them, it is a floor-less door-less tent witch only needs a stick or a hiking pole to set up. Weight is under a pound, Outdoor Research makes a few. I also bring a light weight blanket for them to chill on. Check out a C.O. called Outward Hound they have great back-country food bowls and water dish combos. I have one dog backpack from Mountain-smith and another from Caribou that I like better. It's nice to have the dogs carry their own food in and the trash on the hike out they also carry a first aide kit. Thanks for letting be post a reply, I am new to the NH area and am trying to make friends to take be to Tuckermans this winter to make some turns.

Thanks for the dog backpack advice. We had one... just tried to find it to get the brandname- but I think it's gone. It was a Piece Of S. Fell apart on the 4th hike I think. Very annoying, buckles broke, stitching fell apart.

We make Lego carry all her water, food, frisbees and clean up stuff. We have a collapesable water bowl for her, but I realized that she's already carrying a frisbee and they make great bowls for water and food.

Be sure to check out the "Misprint Rates" which is buried near the middle of the page - I usually buy lego 25 discs a year. They are designed to get chewed up - so as not to hurt teeth. They fly really pretty good.
