Grivel Condor self arrest grip
Never really liked my whippet self arrest grip (seen too many accidents and maimed down jackets on the descent) so I picked up a Grivel Condor. I've got the one with the top section of pole attached:

Anyone figure out how to attach these to BD poles?

something tells me that getting that blade out and thrusting it into the ground while sliding at 30MPH is easier said than done... I dunno...

I have a whippet and it's cool - works really good!
But I'd rather use an axe..
It has so many other uses other than self arrest...
Unless it's on your pack while your sliding...Right Elwood?

I have heard you have to cut off the bottom of the Condor pole and cut in a notch like the flicklock tops ... but haven't tried it myself.

Now if it was spring loaded... "The Condor Switchblade!" [Que in menacing sounding music...] Otherwise I don't see how it's any different than the Whippet, other than the handle... I mean the part about shredding clothing would still be the same.
anyhoo...I agree with preferring an axe. Great for anchors, digging trenches with the adze, and even for intimidating people who don't want to show their pass in the lift lines...

So much for the "Fun Patrol" - now it's the "Axe-weilding Enforcer Patrol" - now THAT would be a kewl hat.

I was thinking it would be easier to close for the descent than removing the whippet.
The other thing I don't like about whippets is that they tend to turn sideways when you bury them, while the handle on the condor might make it easier to keep it vertical in the snow.
I agree that an axe is preferable for really sketchy terrain (plus my helios axe has a bottle opener built into the adze), but for steep skinning where you are using two poles, a self arrest grip is still useful.

Here's the logo for the back:
That would be a cool hat! fahrenheit.com... custom hats!
One of our senior members who had been on Ski Patrol for a number of years(or God Squad as he calls it..) apparently was shoved the other day. I wasn't around to witness it, but supposedly it was done by an employee on his day off! ***? I've seen too many people just barge through, pushing people aside because they think they belong on the lift and others don't. Ah, the wonderful world of Alta, like NYC, only with a bigger attitude, and more jerks. Too bad the skiing there is so friggin good, makes it harder to leave...

You might have a point, it might be easier to close, although I don't know if that would really make much of a difference... I think the argument that it might not turn sideways as easy makes for a stronger case. I'll have to try it out and then form an opinion. Personally if I'm in that situation, I have an axe, but I know not all would choose the same tool for the same situation...

Don't expect it to turn sideways less easily. The grip looks fancy and secure, but since you're holding the part of the grip further from the pointy bit, it may turn sideway more easily (longer lever acting on your wrist). However, the advantage of not impaling your self is a definite plus in my book. If you're in fall-you-die terrain, where self-impalement is the lesser of two evils, it gives you the option of having that axe-in-hand security. Personally, I'll continue to tuck my axe away for the downhill and rely on my razor-sharp edges to get me down safely.
