Top to Bottom?
Thinking of trying to ski Mt. Washington top to bottom if the weather is good. Ive wanted to do it for a few years now. Me and some of my friends are trying to do it one of the first weekends of april. Were going to try to book it right out of school on a friday and get up to Pinkham by 4. Wake up saturday check the conditions and head up to the summit if its ok. (Is there a good place to rent crampons and an ice ax anywhere?) Hopefully we'll be able to get down the Sherburne then get home saturday night just in time for work sunday morning. Whats it going to be like trying to get a lean-to that late on a friday and whats the process to get one? Any other gear besides the normal tux stuff and sleeping gear that i should bring? Any suggestions would be great.

Dunno exactly what you need for the lean to's, but you can get crampons and an ice axe at EMS in North Conway.

It took me years to get everything just right for that ride. My illustrated trip report is here:

The lip is the usual route down but many people go up via Right Gully as it is faster. For your first go it would be best to go up what you come down.
The krumholtz at the top of Right is not always passable on skis.

Video from Summit Climb and Down to Joe Dodge
I had perfect weather. It was March 24th 2005 I think. No wind, it was amazing !

The sound stopped right near the summit, but it looked nice...
There was one random 15-20 second portion where it came on again. I LOVE the sound of the generator building, I don't really know why...

The sound was intentionally cut out, cause the audio was messed up, and rather than have distorted audio, I just removed it. It allot of people.
One thing I learned was have an earlier turn-around time, cause when we were skiing over the lip the bowl was pretty hard, as in FROZEN SOLID.

No sound is definitely better then messed up sound, that was a good call...
Yes, when the shade hits the Lip and the rest of the bowl the temperature drops quickly and it freezes up fast. You want to allot time for the snowfields to make sure your in the floor of the ravine when the shadows arrive, skiing an icy Lip would not be fun...

Now that you have been to the summit you can skip that part and just slide from the parking lot fence*..saves all kinds of time.
Very nice viddy btw...Helmet cam in your future?
* or from the rocks at the upper margin of the snowfields below there.

Lower part of the Sherburne is looking questionable now.... I don't anticipate it to last through the week.... Look at the 25MARCH post with the pics and see for yourself.
Summit to Pinkhams is a treat that doesn't happen very often.... sure it can be done in the winter months but the enjoyment factor diminishes the earlier you go.
If you do it... good luck and enjoy!
