Stolen Bike

I know most of you are east coast, but I wanted to bring this to the attention of all in the SLC area. We had a bike stolen off our 2nd floor terrace and I'm trying to recover it. I already posted a similar post on TGR and any info anyone can get would be repaid handsomnly... you have my T4T promise!

I know it wasn't anyone on this board that took it but I was hoping that maybe you'll be out riding on the trails and see someone on it, that type of thing... anyway, if you do, just try to shoot the **** with them and milk some info out of them casually... you don't have to get confrontational. You can be like, "sweet bike,... how often you ride here..." etc. Just find out things like where they ride all the time, maybe how far they had to drive to get to the trail (What town do they live in?), if they'd be interested in selling it (because you have a friend who was looking at a bike "just like that one")and how can they be contacted (to sell it)... etc.. that sort of thing.

I know it probably sounds lame and the chances are slim, but I figured it's worth a try. I'm very serious when I saw I will reward anyone who can help us out. Here's a pic:

Like I said, it was taken in the Salt Lake City area, but who knows it might pop up online on Craigslist or Ebay... and thanks again everyone.

I have two sisters that live up the highway in Pocatello Idaho and both spend a lot of time mountain biking I,ll forward the pic to them.

Have you checked EBAY, thats where most stolen stuff ends up.

I read an atricle I think posted here, about skis being stolen somewhere out West, and they caught the F'r selling them on EBAY.

The funny thing was Ebay had reccords of all of his sales so not only did he get busted for nabbing 1 pair, he was busted for all the previous ones too.

Seriously check ebay !!!!

Man, I am so sorry that happened. Good luck with the recovery search. It may be worth to keep an eye out on your local Craigs List as well.

Bummer dude..... that bike is on it's way to a chop shop. Stripped down and sold as parts in the China black market or even the Holland underground market.

They show those chop shops in those cop movies but I think they were for fancy cars.... the bikes were in the back rooms.

That sucks….

I had a friend get his KHS stolen about 8 years ago in an apartment break-in here in Toronto. He loved that bike…good geometry lots of after market add-ons and it really fit him well. Apartment gets broken into and it was the get away vehicle. Goes through insurance, gets a new Kona….likes it but not the same but deals with it. New gear is new gear.

Fast forward to summer, three years later he is out drinking with a bunch of friends on a Saturday afternoon and is waiting on the sidewalk for some us who were at the bank using at the ATM. It is a busy street in the heart of Little Italy with lots of people, patios etc. He had to move back to allow some people to walk by and stepped into what he thought was someone standing behind him. He turned around to apologize and it wasn’t someone it was something and not just something it was his stolen bike, locked up to a bike rack on the side of the street.

Everyone comes out of the bank and Dave is pretty excited that he found his bike. He flips it over to check the serial number and sure enough it was his (he had the number in his wallet “just in case”) …we are all standing there in disbelief that he found his bike. So he calls the police on his cell and they were even more surprised. Their first reaction was…”ya right you found your stolen bike locked up only two blocks from your house”. Dave insisted and they said they would send someone over but that in the meantime he should get a bike lock and lock it up till the police arrive. Which he does.

About 10 minutes later not one but three cop cars show up. They had heard the call and they all responded cuz they were in the area and could not believe the story cuz as one of the officers said “this never happens…no one ever gets their bike back”. One of the officers who responded is a detective that handles stolen bikes and stuff. Gives Dave his card and proceeds to write a note on official letterhead something to the effect that they know this bike had been stolen and that they were watching the bike. They told Dave to go home and that they would call him with anything and that they would have patrols keep an eye on it.

A couple of days go by the bike is still there…now double locked so Dave calls the detective and says well we have had no calls from anyone to dispute it and have not noticed that anyone had been by to unlock it so they told him to cut the other one off and take it home. Dave gets his cordless sawz-all and in broad daylight in front of a patio of people having dinner cuts the other lock off and takes the bike home. No one said anything to him, no one.

So two things…don’t give up hope…bikes can be returned and two….if anyone saw anything (like someone lowering the bike from the balcony etc.) they proly wouldn’t have said anything to anyone.

Hope you get it back.

Freebird - sorry that scumbag took your ride. Hope you get it (and him or her) back.

Bannick - crazy story. Glad it worked out. Some piece of sh!t picked my lock and stole my touring bike at my local, small town train station last mother's day while I was taking me mum out to dinner. I still look for it, over a year later, but have pretty much given up hope. Your buddy's story may inspire me to keep looking for my cycle and the prick who's riding it.

We found my team mates custom Colnago leaning against a bank...followed the dude and my training partner went to use the payphone...first we called the team mate and then the cops...they weren't interested until they learned the address where the bike was....

Bannick, wicked good story! I hope this bike gets returned too, because I feel doubly bad- the bike's not mine, it's Rainman's! He had it on our terrace while he was crashing at our pad, and I didn't lock our bikes up because we were riding them frequently and I thought, "Nah, who's gonna climb up here?" They left my dirty Marin all alone though, guess they just took the first easy thing, besides his bike is/was way nicer than mine anyway (but they prolly didn't know this).

SO- I learned my lesson, and I kept my mountain bike out there all locked up... think that worked? Well they didn't steal the bike but decided to steal the seat and seatpost. What are they gonna do, use it for their DUI bike? C'mon! Add those to the list of Dina having her car stolen here back in February and it paints a pretty bleak picture for security around SLC... luckily, petty crime like that is about the only thing that you have to worry about around here.

*sigh* Well my seat rails were all bent and the post kept sliding down, so both needed to be replaced anyway. Now, EVERYTHING is staying inside, except some crappy beer, they can steal that if they want!
