Local Rock Quarry Small TR

3-17-07

I wanted to try out the new G-rides in touring mode in a localized setting to find out if there would be any aches and pains, which thankfully there weren't any.

I took a trip off of my back deck over to a local rock quarry skinned out of my property though some logging roads to the quarry that I have been scoping out from the road the whole season. Its not much, but looked like fun, which IT WAS !

Boots felt great, and I took two runs, skinned up, skins off, turns down, skins back on, back up, skins off, back down, skins on, headed home. I was home by noon, and left the house at 1030am, good Sat trip before taking garbage to the dump, and shovel out the driveway.

Heres the images.

My way in

My destination with two runs of trax on it from me, hard to see bad lighting

I increased the contrast level, so you could see the turns

Just incase that didnt do it for you, I marked them up, red = downward tracks, purple = skin tracks

My tracks headed across the quarry, and out into the woods back to the house

It was not much, but I had a blast, and would do it again. I was cramped for time due to errands but if I had more time, more runs would of been had.
Boots were great, so light, way better than my alpine boots.

I'm glad to see people doing this kind of local touring. I grew up with my mother putting my skis on in the living room, then I'd "skin" up the street to the hills and go up and down all day. Last week I noticed my son & his friends were getting way to into the "I went to a bigger ski area than you" thing so we took a weekend off. They built a few kickers in the yard and 4 of them had more fun doing that all day than they did all year at the ski areas! Less gas consumption, no lift tickets and just pure fun - what's not to like about that? Hoping warm temps will soften the crust around here so I can get a few turns in the trees today, and maybe some low angle trees on South Uncanoonuk later this week....

conditions were tough with the crust today (3/18), but almost bearable on North/North as the crust was not glazed there.

Nice back-yarding. We were sliding in our backyard today, but only becuase it was shear ice on top... probably a 4 deg slope.

Glad the gear worked out.
