Not so good for them...

First, they used power tools..

Second, they clear cut (in avvy terrain)...

Third, the failed to account for the notice they had drawn...

Fourth, they each will have to cough up $5K...

How do you that it was clear cut? I didn't say that anywhere as far as I can tell. I assumed it was a 60 ft. wide glade.

The word "swath" figures in agriculture, indicating complete mowing or cutting of a path. The Kingdom is all about agriculture. Use of the word is particular in such areas....

Nevertheless, your assumption may be spot on. The details will out if the terraserver update in October falls close enough after a snowfall.

That area really doesn't need aggressive cutting. If they really cut that much they would have lessened the quality of the terrain, not enhanced it. I wouldn't mind seeing that area marked for revegetation and not be skied otherwise it will just encourage more bad cutting and possibly a big crackdown on more subtle pruning.

In the Catskils, I trim only non-pines..
150 years ago the Catskills were covered with hemlocks... But they clear cut the whole area for the tanning industry... It a mess
Famous mid 1800's painter - Gifford - painted an amazing painting that shows a completely deforested Hunter Mountain... this painting was one of the things that really pissed people off and started the whole preservation of nature movement..
Hunter Mountain, Twilight

After the clear cut the faster growing trees filled in... But they don't do so well when they get big.. There were forest fires related to the logging.. the trout suffered due to lack of shade and runoff from the tanning industry...
A total disastor.

Anywhere we've trimed over the last decade we can see the Hemlocks coming back... Which is pretty cool...
There's a couple of old stands of hemlock that we skin to a ride... It's sublime.. Old trees - no low branches... not a lot of undergrowth... Nice pitch...

I say prune... but don't touch the pine... And no powertools.. If you can't use a hand saw you shouldnt be cutting...

if i get my lawn mowed - I think I just may work a little on my eventual masterpeice that I've been working on over the last couple years.. if we get a good snow year... It's going to be great..

Some of our handywork

That looks nice D!

As for the dumbS$@# applying little forthought to their little hack n sack plan... I they deserve a penalty and maybe a time out in the corner for bad behavior. I know the desire for sweet BC gladings BUT this was downright arrogant stupidity. I find many of wiser years tend to 'cultivate' their chosen lines with discretion and noone is the wiser until mid-late winter when the only clues left are the tracks of a couple sliders fading in the snow along with the echos of gleeful shouting and hooting.

Mmmmmmm.....fresh!
Damn! Now, I have an itch to go powder skiing through some glades and a cold shower won't wash it away! Where's my mountain bike!

A contact with Commissioner Jonathan Wood's office in the VT Dept. of Forest, Parks, and Recreation has been established by a TTipper. The plot is to get a bunch of backcountry folks up there to replant...and yes, it is a case of clear-cutting!

Updates to follow when available....

I noticed that TT thread as well. Definitely doing my part if they can put a work day together for reforestation efforts. Just as important is spreading the word to fellow backcountry skiers that this area should be considered off limits.

In all honesty, not as bad as I was expecting. It's far from good. But far from as bad as I was thinking.
