Lots of Avy Activity
Quoting today's USFS Avalanche bulletin:
"This loaded an enormous volume of snow into the eastern side of Mount Washington. During the early afternoon we had a brief limited view of the run out zone of Hillman's Highway. What we saw confirmed our earlier suspicions about large full run avalanches being likely. Hillman's ran big and would say it was about a once in 10 year event taking out brush and trees near the terminal end."
Considering I was shoveling 6 foot drifts from in front of emergency exits up here on the summit yesterday, I'm not completely surprised to hear this, but impressed nonetheless. It took the State Park 2.5 hours to get through 5 mile alone on the Auto Road today. Not bad for only about 7 inches of snow.
I can't wait to see pictures of Hillman's and the bowl. We'll probably get to see them tomorrow since it looks like it's going to clear.

= bigger lower snowfield to play upon.... BUT there must be tons of death cookies now.
Watching the weather and stats from a distance and seeing what the recent storm donated, I'm not surpised at big slab slides this year... Teus-Wed storm will be adding to the heavy mix. We'llsee if the good snow comes back late in the week.
Thanks for the heads up on that beta.... good to know.

Hopefully conditions will be good enough this weekend that I can take a look at the carnage in Hillmans...

The avy report said the crown was just over 6 feet deep at the center.
Great photos of the aftermath on the tuckerman.org site - look at all those ice bulges!
Hint - the thumbnail gallery on the left of the site has not been updated. You have to click the 'forward' button above the main photo to see the latest.

I see blue near-vertical ice in one of the photos. Will just have to go up there at the weekend and see who's right.

There is ice under Dodges Drop. Way less than half pitch by the look of it, but cool for TR. "Left-of-Left" will be in, and it will probably get busy too. Half-pitch Leads or TR on Left-of-Left, it is popular with instructors.
Avi report is crucial Re Dodges ice, as there is no cover over there and it is a bulls-eye for slides.
Left-of-Left is out of the slide paths, but be wicked careful to stay out of the slide paths getting over to it.

There's ice up there for sure, but I don't think it was uncovered by a slide if that's what you're saying
