Otto Update

The latest dispatch is both informative and entertaining:

("Cragway is the spot on the Road where the famous snow drift builds throughout the winter. Well, it certainly built itself up this winter, and our conservative estimates are saying 20 feet. As the marketing guy, I'm going with 25 feet.")

Nice find! Thanks for sharing. Many years ago, I spend a winter night in the Obs with a journalist friend who wrote an article for the Washington Post about life on the summit. I went as her "photographer" (and got my one and only bylined photo published). That was the very spot we all had to get out while the snowcat took about an hour to clear the drift that had formed from a few days before. It was amazing to watch the driver plow the road--so narrow!

Looking forward to Otto's opening this year! I will not miss it.

I second that! Sounds like the snowfields will be around for a bit.
At 1:58 in the vid, what mountain is that in the distance?

On saturday I drove south on Rte 16 and made this panorama from near the GG trailhead:

You can see the line of Otto winding/rising past the snowfields:

We will be open on Saturday!
The Mt. Washington Auto Road will open for its 147th season on Saturday, May 3, 2008. The Auto Road will be open to treeline, which is just past the 4-mile point of the Road."

Considering that they usually do not allow parking at that level, what's the point? Sure, when gas was cheap, the inside-the-car ooggling crowds would roll....skiers will be better served by waiting until the are open to the summit.
