Avalanche danger was moderate to high today, Sunday May 18, 1997. Cool temperatures, wind gusts in the morning, and great sun in the afternoon.
Here is a shot over on the left side of the bowl. Somewhat risky for those ascending above the rocks (considering we just received 13 inches of fresh snow 2 nights previous). The snow was heavy and required sufficient unweighting to make those turns.
The ravine and lunch rocks were home to about 200 happy skiers
and hikers. Hillmans was very busy, and HoJos was overflowing with onlookers.
Tons of snow as you can see. The little headwall is even open as well as between a 1/3 and 1/2 of the upper Sherburne ski trail (ski out), unusual for
mid May.
